Using Sunshine Module D Chapter 3 Sections 3-1 & 3-2 Grade 5
Plants • Water usually enters plants through the roots • Water vapor & oxygen exit the leaf
Photosynthesis • Plants trap light energy and use it to make sugars • This process is called photosynthesis
First Stage ofPhotosynthesis • Chlorophyll absorbs sunlight • Light energy is changed to chemical energy • Water breaks down into hydrogen & oxygen chlorophyll
Second Stage of Photosynthesis • In sunlight, green leaves use carbon dioxide and water to make sugars, and oxygen is released
Chlorophyll • The substance in green plants that gives it color and absorbs light is chlorophyll
Chloroplasts • Photosynthesis takes place in the chloroplasts
Respiration • Process in which sugar reacts with oxygen to make carbon dioxide & water in plants • Plants use oxygen to break down sugar molecules to release useful energy
Producers • Organisms that make their own food • Examples: Algae & Plants • They give off oxygen
Consumers • Organisms • Get energy from stored chemical energy in food they eat • They give off carbon dioxide
Herbivore • A consumer that eats only producers • Example: elk • consumer • producer
Carnivore • Consumer that eats only other consumers carnivore
Omnivore • A consumer that eats both producers and consumers
Decomposers • Bacteria & fungi that break down dead organisms are called decomposers
Food Web • System of chains in an ecosystem
Food Chain • Simple feeding pattern • Shows transfer of energy from 1 organism to another • Energy is lost at each step Grasshopper eats plant
