Overview • Introduction RIPE NCC • The role of Regional Internet Registries inInternet Management • The Number Resource Organization (NRO) • Common Internet Myths • Resource Statistics for Arab Countries
What is the RIPE NCC? • Bottom up industry self-regulatory structure • Open and transparent • Neutral and impartial • Not for profit membership association • under Dutch law • Since 1997 (but active since 1992) • Funded by members, thus autonomous • Membership open to all interested parties • Membership elects Executive Board • Membership guides activities & budget • Membership approves fees (“Charging Scheme”)
What are the RIPE NCC’s tasks? • Co-ordination and provision of services for its members & RIPE community • Membership Services • Co-ordination Services • Information Services • One of 4 Regional Internet Registries (RIRs) • Responsible stewardship of Internet Resources • IPv4, IPv6 addresses, ASNs • Allocation and Registration • ARIN, APNIC, LACNIC, RIPE NCC • Emerging: AfriNIC

RIPE NCC Organisational statistics • 90+ staff (24 nationalities) • Including Egypt, Morocco, Palestine, Turkey • 3800+ participating LIR’s / members • 1,800,000+ objects in the RIPE Database • Budget 10.8 M EUR (2004) • We are economically, and politically, independent
RIPE NCC Profile • Not for profit association • Legitimate and stable organisation • Long standing history • Bottom-up self governing structure • Open and transparent • Neutral and impartial
International Situation • APNIC (1993) • ARIN (1997) • LACNIC (2002) • Emerging AfriNIC • Number Resource Organization (NRO) • Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA)

Myth 1: We are running out of Addresses • Information Services on IPv4 http://www.ripe.net/info/info-services/ipv4/ • Regional Internet Registries facilitate • Considerable slowing of address consumption rate • Dramatic increase in efficiency of usage • Extrapolating current trends points to “Expiry Date” in between 2020 and 2040.
Myth 1a: Some Countries cannot get Addresses • Addresses are held in a global pool of unallocated resources • Anybody, Anytime will receive addresses based on “demonstrated need”. • Ensuring longevity of resource pool while ensuring fair distribution
“China vs MIT” IPv6 IPv4 millions of addresses
Myth 2:ICANN Makes Addressing Policies ICANN does not feature in the Policy Development Process
Myth 3: US controlsRoot Nameservers More than 80 and the number is growing
Myths 4: National address administration will make the world a better place • Internet resources have no attribute that links them to geography • National reserves would be wasteful and further depletion • Detrimental to Internet stability • Proliferation of routing information • NRO Response to ITU Memorandum • http://www.ripe.net/info/internet-management/
