Background to the GYTS • WHO & CDC, est. 1998 • Global Tobacco Surveillance System: ‘to strengthen global tobacco control surveillance systems to monitor the global tobacco epidemic and advance research to promote effective tobacco control programs'
Framework Convention on Tobacco Control • Globally, 142 countries have ratified • 100% (27 of 27) in Western Pacific Region • Australia, Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, China, Cook Islands, Fiji, Federated States of Micronesia, Japan, Kiribati, Korea, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Marshall Islands, Mongolia, Nauru, New Zealand, Niue, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Samoa, Singapore, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu, Vanuatu, Viet Nam
2006 NZ GYTS Questionnaire Standardised CDC/WHO questions: • Tobacco smoking prevalence • Knowledge and attitudes • Cessation • Second-hand smoke exposure • School curriculum • Access and availability.
2006 NZ GYTS Administration • 13 to 15-year-old school students • Two-stage cluster sample design • Surveyed by class group, in school • N = 1,310 • Fieldwork Aug-Sept 2006 • Trained staff
Limitations & Implications • Variation in tobacco control action, social environment • No measure of ethnicity in GYTS • Focus on developing countries – USA and NZ only ‘developed’ nations to participate
Future NZ participation • Repeat of NZ GYTS in 2008 • NZ participation in • Global School Personnel Survey ? • Global Health Professional Students Survey ? • “Linking data to action”
