The Progressive Era

The Progressive Era, driven by the depression of 1893, was characterized by a combination of liberal concern for the poor and conservative desires for efficiency. Progressives utilized the scientific method for reform activities and sought to control the environment for the success of individuals. Muckrakers, investigative journalists who viewed themselves as regulators of society, played a crucial role in exposing societal issues. The era witnessed the rise of new forms of education, along with significant government intervention to curb corporate power and corruption. The Progressive Era brought about legislative changes, addressing issues such as drinking, prostitution, and economic regulation. This period also marked the expansion of the federal bureaucracy and the increased involvement of the government in various aspects of society. Woodrow Wilson continued the progressive agenda initiated by Roosevelt, advocating for closer government control through centralized banking, revised tariffs, and the establishment of the federal trade commission. The Progressive Era transformed American politics without overturning capitalism, establishing the idea that government could and should regulate private corporations for the public good, leading to a period of stability and progress.
