It’s going to be slow and difficult driving 60 miles in this. It’s already noon, and your 4th grade son and 7th grade daughter will be home from school at 3:15. The wind is whipping the snow around and there are moments where you can’t see beyond the hood of your car. Traffic is crawling since no one can see the lane markings or the cars around them. You’re listening to the news on the radio as you squint to see through the blinding snow. On the news you hear that the state police have declared Colorado’s traction law is now in effect. Pull onto the shoulder and put chains onto your tires. Winter Driving: Necessary Supplies Lesson Scene: Accident Narration or script After a blinding flurry of snow, you see a car has slid sideways right in front of you, completely blocking your lane. It’s far too late to stop, and anyway, there are cars all around you. There’s no place to go. You brake as hard as you dare, feeling the rear of your car fishtailing, and slam into the car in front of you. You are jolted forward, feeling the pressure across your chest as your seatbelt catches you. Fortunately, you were going pretty slowly, so the airbag does not deploy. Before you can even react, something slams into you from behind, whipping your head forward again. More squealing, bangs, crashes and horns go on for a horrible time until everything falls silent in the heavy snow. Your driver-side door is smashed in, but you can get out the passenger side. A cut on your forehead is bleeding into your eyes, your neck hurts, and you have a headache, but other than that you seem to be unharmed. What do you want to do? While waiting for things to get moving, you call up the CDOT map on your phone, and are horrified to discover that the state police have closed the road. You call 911 and explain the situation. They tell you to sit tight and the first responders will get to you as soon as possible, but it could take many hours before they reach you. Winter Driving: Necessary Supplies Lesson Scene: Waiting in storm Narration or script You are stuck in your car in the middle of a blizzard. It might take hours, possibly even all night, for help to reach you. Try to run your car for a few minutes every hour to warm up, and be sure to keep snow cleared away from your exhaust pipe. Let’s check your supplies. Pictures of supplies Drag supplies into seat to use them With your car turned off, you are getting very cold. Did you bring warm clothing? (Button states visible on all layers) Layers: For each supply see a layer with the problem, check if you brought the supply, and feedback (one positive layer and one negative layer per supply)– your state is worse or better because of supplies, with relative +1 or -1 lifepoints for each. The continue button brings you to a feedback layer. Check variable yes/no to determine which feedback you see. (i.e. don’t trust accuracy of self-reporting.) Example: Layer cold 1, feedback cold 1 (pos), feedback cold 1 (neg), etc. Feedback layers include NEXT button instead of YES/NO buttons. NEXT leads to new layer and new problem. Summation final screen – your overall state of being depending on what you packed; check supply points to determine positive or negative final summation screen. Text for problem layers: Cold 1: With your car turned off, you are getting very cold. Did you being warm clothing? Cold 2: The temperature is dropping, and you can’t stop shivering. Did you bring any blankets? Thirsty: You’ve been in your car for hours, and your throat aches because you are so thirsty. Did you bring any water? Hungry: It’s been hours since your quick lunch at the client’s office, and you are starting to feel faint with hunger. Did you bring any food? Dark: It’s dark outside now, and you have to save your phone battery. Did you bring a flashlight? Exhaust: You go out to clear your exhaust pipe and find the snow has blown into a huge pile against the back of your car. Did you bring a shovel so you can dig out?
Winter Driving: Necessary Supplies Lesson Scene: Rescue Narration or script The green checkmarks show essential supplies that can either give you better visibility, prevent you getting stuck, get you unstuck, or save your life if you are trapped for hours due to an accident or road closure. The other supplies are useful, but not essential. You should carry your winter preparedness kit from October to April. It can snow any time!
