Early Examples of Democracy in Europe • Magna Carta(1215)-The King of England agreed to give some rights such as trial by jury to the nobles. • Petition of Rights(1628)-The common man is given some rights. Notice Jamestown is already settled. • English Bill of Rights(1689)- Increase limits on the King. Increase rights of Parliament and the people.

  3. Early Examples of Democracy in Europe • Montesquieu-Separation of Powers- Developed the theory that power should be divided. Two groups should make the laws and a third different group should enforce the laws. Madison when writing the U.S. constitution borrows this concept and separate “branches” and adds another branch to interpret the laws.

  4. John Locke-Social Contract theory- The government agrees to protect the people’s NATURAL RIGHTS(Rights given by God) and if they do so then the people agree to obey the government. We’ll study this in detail when we get to the DECLARATION of Independence. Thomas Jefferson uses Locke’s argument as an outline.
