  3. The Internet • “The Internet has revolutionized the computer and communications world like nothing before. The invention of the telegraph, telephone, radio, and computer set the stage for this unprecedented integration of capabilities. The Internet is at once a world-wide broadcasting capability, a mechanism for information dissemination, and a medium for collaboration and interaction between individuals and their computers without regard for geographic location. “ - The Internet Society (ISOC)

  4. A Brief History of the Internet • 1960s – conceived • 1971 – email most popular application • 1973 - international • 1974 – commercial version of ARPANET goes online • TCP/IP created

  5. Brief History (cont.) –1980’s • 1981 - 213 hosts • 1982 – the word Internet is coined • mid 80’s – boom in PC industry • 1984 - the number of internet hosts exceed 1000 • 1987 - the number of internet hosts exceed 10,000 • 1988 – First internet worm

  6. Brief History (cont.) –early 1990s • 1990 - ARPANET is decommissioned • 1991 – world wide web is born • 1991-1993 • electronic commerce • Gopher • HTML • Mosaic • 1996 – 10 million hosts, the internet covers the globe, 25 year anniversary of the Internet

  7. Late 90’s – new technologies Technologies discussed by students in their presentations: 1991 – Java conceived, made available May 23rd, 1995 1996 – ActiveX 1998 – XML 1999 – net cell phones 2000 – Windows 2000 Server, Internet2 deploys IPv6

  8. JAVA • Been developed by Sun Microsystems since 1991 • Target: to create a technology on which electronic industry could count (for TVs and other little devices). • Was a flop, changed focus to online services, net-based systems.

  10. ActiveX • Microsoft’s set of object oriented programming technologies and tools • Main technology is the Component Object Model – COM objects exhibit OO characteristics – encapsulation, inheritance, polymorphism

  11. XML • Extensible markup language – unlike HTML, the markup symbols are unlimited and self-defining • Flexible way to create common information formats • Formal recommendation from the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C).

  12. Net Cell Phones • Bluetooth • WAP • J2ME • Phones and internet: VXML

  13. IPv6 • Latest level of the internet protocol, improvements to the current version IP Version 4 • IP addresses lengthened from 32 bits to 128 bits • Relief from impending shortage of internet addresses
