Petascale Ideas • What could visualization do with Petascale Computing?
Why Is Visualization Unique? • Fixed resolution and speed output device. • No matter how much simulation data is produced the visual presentation is limited to a finite resolution and speed. • Can play with that a little – IMAX, 60 fps but practically fixed.
Where Is Industry Headed? • Larger and Larger Render Farms – WETA in New Zealand. • More and more powerful GPUs with SLI – the nVidia cards in this machine.
What Appears Appealing? • Incredibly Photoreal renderering – this is coming. Movies will drive it. Games will adopt it as it arrives.
What Appears Appealing? • Real-time feature film video editing. • A Scanner Darkly done over-night.
What Appears Appealing? • Full facial database search of entire football stadium during the game. • Automated computer search of surveilance footage. • Makes it worthwhile to save EVERYTHING and actually be able to search and use the footage.
What Appears Appealing? • Intel is planning large-scale multi-core systems. • No separate GPU. Simply allocate multiple cores to the rendering process. • Full computation on the core, full access to system memory, can do multi-cpu supersampling and rendering.
What Appears Appealing? • Lots of predictive pre-rendering. • For example: Architectural walk-through of a very large CAD model. • Load the large model onto the machine. Start viewing at one location. While in that location the petascale system is predictively rendering views that are easily accessible from the current location. • Would work well for say a Boeing 777 CAD model.
What Appears Appealing? • Render out all parameterized variations on a rendering algorithm for a scene or visualization. • Then the user simply selects amongst the multiple outputs.
What Appears Appealing? • Personalized Digital Cinema • Assume a highly synthetic movie. • User can adjust location, position, and orientation of various objects within the film and the system can begin rendering and playback almost immediately. • Key Component Here is Petascale.
What Appears Appealing? • Interactive multiple parameter computational steering. • Don’t run larger simulations run more of them with varying parameters. • Visualization lets you adjust the parameters and you can launch many simulations to sweep out the results. • Rule for Petascale – Never Run Just One Job.
What Appears Most Likely? • Very high resolution synthetic movie scenes are almost a certainty. • Massive image database searches. • Anything that can be cast into a search paradigm will probably be developed quickly.
