Turn in: Component of Blood Lab • 5 minutes to study for quiz. • Body Cavities • Types of tissues • Nervous System • Endocrine System • Feedback Loops & Homeostasis • Blood
Warm-up 4/18: Describe the difference between positive and negative feedback. RESPIRATORY AND CIRCULATORY SYSTEMS pp. 933-939AND 946-950
CIRCULATORY SYSTEM • moves fluid throughout the body
STRUCTURES • Heart – muscular organ that pumps blood to all parts of the body. a. divided into right side and left side by septum b. each side has an upper section (atrium) and lower section (ventricle).
Vessels: smooth muscle surrounded by connective tissue a. arteries – carries blood from the heart b. aorta –Largest artery. c. veins –carries blood to the heart d. capillaries –narrow blood vessels that pass blood in single file.
MOVEMENT OF BLOOD • right side: (deoxygenated) blood from body to heart to lungs Body vena cavae rt. atrium rt. ventricle pulm. arteries lungs • left side: (oxygenated) blood from lungs to the heart to body. • Lungs Pulmonary veins lt. atrium lt. • ventricle aorta body
when the heart contracts, blood is squeezed from right atrium right ventricle • when heart contracts a 2nd time, blood in right ventricle is sent through blood vessels into lungs.
Homework • Read p. 933-939 • Problems p 939 #1,3,4,6
EXTERNAL FUNCTION • exchange of gases between atmosphere and blood mouth/nose pharynx epiglottis trachea bronchi lungs
MECHANISM • Large skeletal muscle (diaphragm) contracts pulling lungs down causing them to fill with air
INTERNAL FUNCTION • exchange of gases between blood and cells • Gases diffuse across due to concentration gradients lungs (alveoli) capillaries (carrying blood)
Homework • Read p. 933-939AND 946-950 • Problems p 939 #1,3,4,6 • Problems p 950 #1,3,4,6
