CCF M2M Certification: Demystifying the testing for M2M devices Dennis Fu CDMA Certification ForumJune 14th 2012
Why M2M? • M2M communications is set to drive next generation wireless service adoption by opening up key new enterprise verticals that will enhance and improve end users lives • By 2020 up to 50 billion connected devices may be present creating the largest Internet of Things • Ensuring these devices access and utilize the wireless network properly is key to maintain network integrity and end service delivery
The CCF M2M Program • The CCF M2M Program consists of both a Module Certification & Integrated Device Certification Process • Module Certification ensures full conformance to CDMA2000 Minimum Performance & Signaling Conformance standards as defined by 3GPP2 • M2M Integrated Devices can leverage the testing already done on a CCF certified Module and perform a minimal set of delta tests focused on RF Parametric and Service Conformance tests as defined in CDG 195

Benefits of M2M Certification Scale Support Manage Deploy Implement • A unified and standardized approach to testing is essential: • Lower barrier to entry for M2M product vendors who may not be familiar with wireless WAN technologies to penetrate new markets • Creates a common baseline for Operators to ensure network integrity & service conformance while allowing for effective on boarding & management of new devices • Allows for module manufacturers to develop product once for use in multiple markets and create a greater ROI and economies of scale
M2M for 4G Multi-RAT Networks • As M2M ecosystem maturity grows, operators will be more effectively offering service based on nature of the offering: • Operators will more effectively manage & provide end user services ensuring Quality of Service (QOS) and tiered pricing models • Standards bodies will develop requirements specific to M2M applications & services • Certification of devices will continue to evolve to ensure new service and application enablers are present & functioning properly Low Bandwidth Services provided over 2G High Bandwidth Services over 3G/4G • Smart Metering • Sales & Payments • Fleet Tracking • etc • Security & Surveillance • First Responders & Emergency Services • Remote Patient Diagnostics • etc
