Chapter 22: Introduction to Plants El- Zoor, Jenna Biology- Period 4 Mr. Miguez November 18, 2013
22.1 What is a Plant? • In order for plants to survive they need to have; water, minerals, sunlight, and gas exchange. • Plants adapted to life with vascular tissue, and were more capable of doing things without water, and conserving it. • The two phases of the life cycle of land plants are a diploid and haploid phase.
22.2Seedless Plants • Green algae are found in salt and fresh water, and also moist area, which means they are mostly aquatic. • The lack of vascular tissue is the reason why bryophytes are small. • Without vascular tissues, plant would not be able to transport nutrients or water, and also for vascular plants to move fluids through their bodies against the force of gravity.
22.3 Plant Seeds • Process that is reproductive in cones and flowers, sperm transfer, and protection of embryo seeds are adaptations that allow seeds reproduction without open water. • Pollen to the female cone lets fertilization take place in gymnosperms in the absence of water.
22.4 Flowering Plants • Angiosperms reproduce sexually by flowers, and develop into fruits that protect, surround, and disperse the seeds. • Angiosperms are categorized by how strong the stems are, number of seed leaves, and the growing seasons numbers they live.
