Citizenship by Birth • Jus soli - Law of the Soil - Most common form of citizenship • Birth to an American Parent • Jus sanguinis– “Law of the blood” • If only 1 parent is a US citizen • That parent must have lived in the US for at least 5 years; of after age of 14
Citizenship by Naturalization • The only privilege naturalized citizens do not have is being eligible to serve and president or vice president • Qualifications for Citizenship • Entered US legally • Be of good moral character • Declare their support of the principles of American government and demonstrate knowledge of US history and government • Prove they can read, write, and speak English • Go before a naturalization court and take an oath of allegiance to the United States • To be denied: Draft dodgers, military deserters, polygamists, anarchists, Communists or followers of any other totalitarian system
US Immigration Policies • Immigration has been a cornerstone of American domestic policy to meet the demands of the job market • Several attempts to limit immigration from certain parts of the world occurred due to racist views - ex) Germans during WWI and WWII - ex) Arabs with ties to terrorists
Rights, Duties and Responsibilities • Right – power granted to citizens in a constitution • Duty – required action by a citizen of a nation • Responsibility - suggested actions by citizens that are not required
Duties of US citizens Obey Laws – maintains order in society Pay Taxes – money used to pay for schools, roads, bridges Defend the Nation in Times of War Serve in Court – ensures fair verdict from your peers Attend School – learns skills for a career path, think critically and independently, form your own opinions
Responsibilities of Citizens Be Informed of Major Issues - read papers, watch news, know your rights Speak Up and Vote - ensures people run the government not government running the people Respect others’ rights, respect diversity and contribute to the common good
