Sub-Saharan Africa • Located beneath the Sahara Desert • Region with largest number of countries • Mostly tribal • Economically and politically unstable • Major problems include nationalism, HIV/AIDS, deforestation, poverty, lack of education
South Asia • India major country • World’s second largest population • Religious issues between Muslims and Hindus • Major issues include Kashmir region, Afghanistan, HIV/AIDS, over population, caste system
Asia or the Far East • China, Japan, Taiwan and the Koreas • China has largest population in the world • Kim Jong Ill in North Korea • Taiwan and China and border disputes • Mongolia is least densley populated country in the world
Europe • Two major sub-regions of East and West • Major historical issues like WWI and WWII • Major issues include population decline, EU, disparity between East and West • 3rd largest population cluster in the world
Eurasia • Dominate country is Russia but also the “stans” • Former Soviet Union area • Current issues are related to USSR and that impact • Economically struggling but fairly high level of devlopment
Islam • Countries in Middle East, North Africa and Western South Asia that are dominately Muslim • No real separation between church and state recognized • Major issues include terrorism, Israel, Iraq, Oil, lack of natural resources and water
Latin America • Consists of Central and Southern America and the Caribbean • Area previously controlled by Spain and Portugal • Current issues include political instability, growing anti-US governments, poverty, lack of education, deforestation
Australia and Oceania • Australia, New Zealand and South Pacific Islands • Major issues include poverty, indigenous people and environmental distruction
North America • U.S, Mexico and Canada • US is dominate country • Canada’s issues include separatism and US • Mexico’s issues are poverty, disparity with US, NATO • US deals with immigration, terrorism, world power
