  1. Modeling Solidification and Grain Structures in Electroslag Remelting Chris Szczepanski Advisor: Prof. Krane August 1, 2002

  2. Recap – Phase 1 • Monte Carlo method determines solidification based on interfacial energy • Monte Carlo method with temperature dependence

  3. Recap – Phase 2 • Cellular Automaton method determines depression of the liquidus temperature based on curvature

  4. Δx/Δt ratio • This determines the rate of solidification • Large Ratio – s/l interface travels closer to liquidus isotherm • Too small – solidification front can’t keep up

  5. Δx/Δt Ratio • Cooled walls will not be able to pull heat out at as fast as melting temp isotherm moves • Solid-liquid interface will close in on Tm

  6. Results • Solid-liquid interface will close in on Tm

  7. Undercooling

  8. Temperature Gap

  9. Grain Density

  10. Ao Studies

  11. Future Studies • More in-depth analysis of Δx/Δt ratio • Analysis of physical basis for various constants • Crystallographic orientation model
