BASIC BUSINESS IDEA ENERGY FROM CONSUMER WASTE • by Chetan Joshi
SITUATION/OPPORTUNITY • The stench and ugly sight of garbage dumped on the roadside, sometimes overflowing from drains or floating on the surface of rivers, is not at all uncommon in India. It is disgusting, until you get used to it and begin to ignore it.
SITUATION/OPPORTUNITY • India’s garbage generation stands at 0.2 to 0.6 kilograms of garbage per head per day
SITUATION/OPPORTUNITY • waste disposal in India simply involves rounding up the waste from different parts of the city, and dumping everything in a landfill. Once a landfill is completely occupied, a new landfill is discovered in a different part of the city.
SITUATION/OPPORTUNITY • Cities those are fortunate enough to have a river passing through them, have an additional dump for all their garbage. The state of the Yamuna River in Delhi is a testimony to this fact. The river practically doesn’t flow at all
SITUATION/OPPORTUNITY • the municipalities are ill-equipped to deal with the massive amounts of waste they collect everyday. Another problem is their inefficiency in collecting the waste. Currently, their efficiency is only about 50 to 80 per cent.
WHY OF THE BUSINESS • NOBLE CAUSE • WITH WASTE MANAGEMENT • WITH GENERATION OF RENEWABLE SOURCE OF ENERGY • PRODUCING ORGANIC FERTILIZERS • RECYCLING POLYTHIN • REDUCING THE GENERATION OF GASES LEADING TO GLOBAL WARMING BY 4% • AND OFCOURCE EARNING PROFIT
SOURCES OF INCOME • MAJORLY THROUGH GENERATION OF BIOGAS • FERTILIZERS • RECYCLING • GOVT WILL PAY FOR TAKING RESPONIBILITY OF LIFTING THE WASTE AND MAINATAINING CITIES CLEAN • GOVT CAN GIVE TAX EXEMPTION AS WELL AS INITIAL FUNDING AS THIS IS THE MAJOR PROBLEM FACE BY GOVT. • CORPORATES CAN HELP AS CSR • MORE THAN 1 CRORE INCOME PER DAY POSSIBLE
PROCESS INVOLVED • COLLECTION OF WASTE FROM CITIES • SEPERATING BIOWASTE FROM POLYTHIN AND TIN WASTE. • POLYTHINWASTE AND TIN TO BE SOLD TO RECYCLING INDUSTRY • BIOWASTE TO BE USED IN BIOGAS PLANT TO GENERATE BIOGAS • PLANTS WASTE CAN BE USED AS ORGANIC FERTILIZERS • ELECTRICITY ALSO CAN BE GENERATED THROUGH BIOGAS. • SELLING BIOGAS/ELECTRICITY • SELLING FERTILIZERS
WHATS NEW??? • Domestic biogas technology is a proven and established technology in many parts of the world • such facilities exist in over two million households in India • In 2003, the United States consumed 147 trillion BTU of energy from "landfill gas", about 0.6% of the total U.S. natural gas consumption • Around 1970, China had installed 6,000,000 digesters in an effort to make agriculture more efficient • Germany is Europe's biggest biogas producer and In 2010 there were 5,905 biogas plants operating throughout the whole country • There are currently around 60 non-sewage biogas plants in the UK, most are on-farm, but some larger facilities exist off-farm, which are taking food and consumer wastes
BUT • In india, there are not many plants run on large scale • Most of the existing biogas projects work on cowdung or agriculture waste • There is no biogas project anywhere working on municipality waste
BECAUSE • Collection of waste is a problem/difficulty • Seperation of bio and nonbio waste is difficult
solution • One solution can be cutting and washing polythin waste by machines on high pressure • Setting seperate collection system which can partially solve the problem
SWOT • S • Free raw material • Non renewable energy sources has huge support • Business itself is CSR • W • Seperating bio and nonbio waste • Business dont have glamour sounds cheap • High setupcost and area required • R&D required • Handling low cost labour professionally will be difficult
SWOT • O • WASTE DISPOSAL IS A BIG PROBLEM • CAN FORM A CHAIN OF PROJECTS THROUGHOUT INDIA • NO COMPETETION • T • Availability of labour
STP • S • MUNICIPALITY GENERAL WASTE • HOTELS AND OTHER CORPORATE ORGANISATIONS WASTE • T • GAS/ELECTRICITY TO CORPORATES OR HOUSEHOLD • P • MAJORLY IN METROS INITIALLY
CALCULATIONS • POPULATION OF BANGLORE 80-90 LACS • WASTE GENERATED PER HEAD IS 0.2 TO 0.6 KG PER DAY • TOTAL WASTE AVAILABLE MINIMUM 80*0.3=24 LACS KG • IF 30% OF THAT IS BIOWASTE THEN BIOWASTE AVAILABLE IS 7.5 LACS KG PER DAY
CALCULATIONS • 1000 litre digester can produce 200-300 methane per day • 7.5 lac kg waste can give 1lac litre waste • Which can produce minimum 20000 litre methane per day • Or almost 200000 KWH/day • And still it can give for next few days • WHICH IS INCOME OF 1 CRORE/DAY
DETAIL STUDY REQUIRED • WHAT VALUE WE WILL GET FOR PLASTIC AND OTHER NONBIODEGRADEBLE WASTE • WHAT VALUE WE WILL GET FOR PLANT WASTE AS FERTILIZER
DETAIL STUDY REQUIRED • WHAT IS THE COST FOR SETTING PLANT • HOW MUCH LABOUR WILL BE REQUIRED AND THEIR WAGES • HOW MUCH VECHICLES REQUIRED FOR CARRING WASTE • WHETHER FOR ENTIRE BANGLORE PLANT SHOULD BE SET AT ONLY ONE PLACE • HOW TO SEPARATE BIODEGRADABLE AND NONBIODEGRADABLE WASTE • HOW TO DEVELOP WASTE COLLECTION CHANNEL • THE SEPERATION CAN BE PLANNED PARTIALLY AT COLLECTION ITSELF
