CCC – jobs for young men 18 – 25 • thought FDR was abusing his power • thought govt was interfering too much in business & personal lives • 1 powerful opponent was Huey Long • he wanted more help for families instead of businesses
Changes in the expectations of government • Why did FDR try to change the Court system? • Different people began to lead the government • courts ruled that many of his programs were unconstitutional • FDR wanted to be able to add more judges – ones that would agree with his plans: COURT PACKING • MANY people disagreed with this plan, hurt his popularity • Frances Perkins – 1st woman to be a Secretary in the Cabinet (Labor) • Eleanor Roosevelt – FDR’s wife who became his eyes and ears to problems & supported women’s causes

warm up 3/26/12 • If the New Deal didn’t fix the Great Depression, then why is it remembered as a significant government program? • It gave people hope that the government was trying to help. It provided jobs and welfare for those needing it the most. It did great public work like parks, highways, electricity to rural areas. We still benefit today from some of the projects. We still have Social Security and banking insurance today.
