Housekeeping Items • Before I introduce our special guest speaker, I want to draw your attention to a couple of items. • The federal government has cut two long-standing programs of great importance to our speaker’s topic today: the Fraser River Estuary Management Program (FREMP) and the Burrard Inlet Environmental Assessment Program (BIEAP). • Next Tuesday, lecture called “Of Whales and Men: Ocean Pollution in the 21st Century.” • The Weather Channel is hosting a teach-in on environ-mental issues on Thursday, March 21st after 7 p.m. • There is a very worthwhile (ultra-short) video on the impact of plastics on marine birds – see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=78BQKPssoXM. • On fish issues, see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n9v-cDwEVDQ.
Our Speaker, Scott Aikenhead • Scott has 25 years of experience in analysis and decision support in ecology, business, and government, including sustainable urban planning and natural resource management. He has led many science projects watersheds, fisheries and GIS/RS, and many regional planning projects for land-use and infrastructure for cities and for utilities in water, wastewater, and energy. • Asa research biologist with DFO for 15 years, he gained extensive experience in ecological models, fisheries science and manage-ment, geomatics, statistics, and numerical analysis, and led the introduction of new technologies for natural resources management. • He was scientist-in-chargefor many high-seas research vessel cruises, and participated extensively in international fora. Scott has been a consultant for the past fifteen years.
