What is the impression at this time? Basis? Carcinoma of the esophagus • Progressive dysphagia (initially to solid foods then to liquids) • strongly associated with gastroesophageal reflux and Barrett’s esophagus. • May present with cough, choking, and stidor if a tracheoesphageal fistula is formed or when there is extension to the tracheobronchial tree. • Associated with smoking and alcohol consumption
What is the impression at this time? Basis? • Anorexia and weight loss • Family history of cancer • Barium swallow finding
Diagnostic procedure? • Endoscopy • Determine the depth of the wall penetration by the tumor and presence of lymph node metastasis can be determined with 80% accuracy. • For visualization of the tumor and to obtain histopathologic confirmation of the diagnosis.
Diagnostic procedure? • CT Scan • extent of tumor spread to the mediastinum and para-aortic lymph nodes
