  2. TYPES OF ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS • Additional Basic Qualifications (ABQs) • Additional Qualification Courses (AQs) • Honour Specialist Courses • Principal’s Qualification Courses (PQP)

  3. All courses: Regulated under O. Reg. 176/10 Accredited by Ontario College of Teachers (OCT) using their course guidelines Entered on candidate’s certificate of qualification Each course is a minimum of 125 hours of work Degree credit courses May count for grid movement

  4. What is an ABQ? An ABQ is a divisional qualification and qualifies you to teach in a division beyond the two that are part of your BEd program. Primary ABQ (Grades K-3) Junior ABQ (Grades 4-6) Intermediate ABQ (Grades 7-10) Senior ABQ (Grades 11-12)

  5. EDUC 4605 - Primary ABQ Goals: To familiarize candidates with the curriculum in Ontario for Grades JK - 3 To support appropriate strategy selection and development for students in Grades JK to 3 No teachable subjects are required

  6. EDUC – 4615 - Junior ABQ Goals: To familiarize candidates with the curriculum in Ontario for Grades 4-6 To support appropriate strategy selection and development for students in Grades 4 to 6 No teachable subjects are required

Intermediate ABQ Goals: To familiarize candidates with the curriculum in Ontario for Grades 7-10 and extend the skills and knowledge for teaching in the intermediate division and of a subject-specific intermediate division program. One half of the course (the elective) concentrates on specific content for one teaching subject. Course composed of a Core component (50%) and an elective component (50%). Core component includes Methods, Special Education, etc.

Teachable Subject Requirements - Intermediate Two (2) full undergraduate courses in one teachable subject – 12 credits Must check teachable eligibility with the Office of the Registrar before registering The Reg. office staff are qualified to evaluate your transcript to determine which courses will count toward which teaching subject.

Senior ABQ Goals: To familiarize candidates with the curriculum in Ontario for Grades 11 and 12 and extend the skills and knowledge for teaching in the senior division and of a subject-specific senior division program. One half of the course (the elective) concentrates on specific content for one teaching subject. Course composed of a Core component (50%) and an elective component (50%). Core component includes CDE, Ed & Schooling and Special Ed.

Teachable Subject Requirements - Senior ABQ Senior ABQ requires three full undergraduate courses (18 credits) You do not need to be qualified in two subjects to take the Senior ABQ – only one is required Must check your teachable eligibility with the Office of the Registrar before registering The Reg. office staff are qualified to evaluate your transcript to determine which courses will count toward which teaching subject.

  13. What is an AQ? In an AQ, you have an opportunity to focus in on specific area to expand on qualifications Two types: • One Session AQs • For example, Outdoor Experiential Education, Autism, Teaching Combined Grades, Alternative Education • Three Session AQs • Offered in three-parts that lead to a Specialist qualification • For example, Special Education, Parts I, II and III, Kindergarten, Parts I, II, and III, FSL, Parts I, II and III, Reading, Parts I, II, and IIII…..and many more

  14. Three Session AQs Once you have taken all three parts of a Three-Session Qualification you are deemed to be a Specialist in that area. Part I courses – you are eligible to take Part I courses immediately after BEd program completion Part II courses – must have one year of successful teaching experience (194 teaching days). These can be supply days and don’t have to be consecutive, they are cumulative. Part III courses – must have two years of successful teaching experience (388 days) with one year in the subject area

  15. Honour Specialist Courses Examines a particular curriculum subject from Kindergarten to Grade 12. Emphasizes learning theory, developmental needs, and effective teaching methods pertinent to the subject specialization Normally taken by High School Teachers who want to be Department Heads or by Curriculum Consultants Need two years of successful teaching experience, one year in subject area, and an Honours Undergraduate Degree in the subject (54 credits with a B average)

  17. Principal’s Qualification Program After 5 years of successful teaching experience Must be qualified in three divisions (one of which must be Intermediate) Require either two specialists, one specialist and half of a Masters degree, or a full Masters degree

Online Delivery (Blackboard) • Wide variety of courses including ABQs, one session AQs, three session AQs, and Honour Specialist. • All content delivered online • Regular interaction required (i.e., participation on discussion board) • Asynchronous communication • Estimate 10 to 15 hours of work per week • Cannot be fast-tracked • Offered in three sessions per year (generally 12 wks in length) • Spring/Summer • Fall/Winter • Winter/Spring • ABQs and higher enrolment AQs (e.g., Special Ed, Reading, etc.) offered in every session

  19. Face-to Face (On-site) Courses • 4-week May/June Intersession – North Bay or Brantford campuses • ABQs in May • Special Education and FSL in June • Brantford offers a more limited selection of courses • Courses to be offered finalized in the Spring • Registration opens in March

May 2014 Tentative Class SchedulesMay 5 to May 30 • Primary and Junior ABQ • 8:30 to 4:30 (Monday to Thursday) • Intermediate and Senior ABQs • Core component (8:30 – 12:30 – Monday to Thursday) • Elective (Teaching subject) afternoons or evenings • Course scheduling and rooms not finalized until late April when exact student numbers are known. Please do not inquire before that time. • Cancellations for low enrolment courses will be made in early April.

June 2014 IntersessionJune 2 to June 27 Special Education, Part I (North Bay and Brantford) French as a 2nd Language, Part I (North Bay only) – testing dates TBA Students must arrange a practicum placement for the week of June 3. An email will be sent once practicum forms have been uploaded to website. Classroom component, June 9 to June 27. Classes scheduled (8:30 to 4:30 – there will be Friday classes) No classes scheduled on convocation days

Important Information Registration Begins March 10 on WebAdvisor Fees - $675 for AQs & $750 for ABQs (may be subject to change) Payment is due at the time of registration Scheduling for Intermediate and Senior ABQ courses may involve evening classes – PLAN FOR THIS Course schedules and rooms are not finalized until late April when exact student numbers are known June courses are scheduled around convocation Do not request that you be in the same section as a friend – we assign course sections and do not accommodate special requests

  26. Registration Must be a current BEd student in good standing Must confirm eligibility for Intermediate or Senior ABQ course teachables by emailing registrar@nipissingu.ca from your student email account. Application with the Ontario College of Teachers must be in-progress. You are required to enter your OCT number on WebAdvisor prior to registration

  27. Registration Process • Registration is done through WebAdvisor. • System won’t allow registration unless you have entered your OCT number on the system prior to registration • Login to WebAdvisor, go to Teachers or Masters Students Menu, click on Register OCT number • System won’t allow you to register for Intermediate or Senior ABQ courses if you have not checked your eligibility with the Office of the Registrar

  28. Any changes to your registration must be made through WebAdvisor Non-payment of fees, non-attendance or telling the professor is NOT CONSIDERED an official withdrawal Withdrawal from courses must be made through WebAdvisor or in writing to the Office of the Registrar Prior to the first class, students who are deemed to be in poor academic standing will be de-registered from any ABQ or AQ courses that they register for.

  29. Payment of Fees • Provide your credit card information when registering on-line, or • If paying by cheque or cash, fees must be paid to the Finance Office within two days of registration

  30. Reporting Course Results • Grade available on WebAdvisor after July 31 • University Transcript sent to you • Reported by university to OCT in August • Recorded by OCT on your Certificate of Qualification (will not be on the first certificate that you receive) • Must be an OCT member in good standing to record your course

  31. IMPORTANT ADVISORYREQUIREMENT TO BE REPORTED TO OCT FOR THE INTERSESSION ABQS AND AQS All graduating teachers must pay their OCT membership dues and be a member in good standing no later than JULY 31, 2014. Any teacher who fails to pay their dues and is not a member in good standing with the College by July 31, 2014 will NEVER be reported to OCT for AQ or ABQ courses taken in this session. If you do not plan to follow through with OCT certification immediately following completion of your pre-service program, you should not plan to take AQs until you are a member in good standing.
