Streamwood High School Illinois School District U4 http://www.u-46.org Streamwood High School http://www.u-46.org/shs Streamwood High School is dedicated to academic and personal growth and positive choices. All of this happens in a supportive and inclusive atmosphere of community, a key concept at Streamwood High School. Whether it is fostering the development of student communities, building communities of teachers or welcoming the involvement of the Village of Streamwood, SHS strives to develop relationships. Innovative programs that encourage students’ social and academic growth are provided for this diverse student body. At this school there is a deliberate decision to assign freshmen to small groups, a school within a school. This approach encourages students to connect with others in their group, allowing them to become acclimated before moving on to develop broader relationships. Each group of students is taught by the same group of core teachers throughout their first year providing an opportunity to develop a connection with the school personnel. The high school was a pioneer in the district in instituting the requirement for all students to take algebra their freshman year. Expectations are that all students can succeed in this class. Algebra classes from honors to Algebra 1.5 are provided to meet varying student skill levels and needs. If students require reinforcement of their math skills they will attend Algebra 1.5, a class that is extended to a 90 minute block allowing time to review skills and strategies so students have a strong base to build on. Students with strong skills are challenged in the honors classes. The World Language and International Studies Academy is also housed at SHS. Students from across the district attend the academy. The community is encouraged to become a part of the school right from the beginning of the year. The principal sends a letter to every business and governmental agency in Streamwood inviting them to a Community Connections meeting. The purpose of the meeting is to update the community on events and accomplishments at their high school. It is not unusual to find the mayor or state representative visiting the school.
