  2. If you were an Ephesian (and you are) 10/23/11

  3. A walk through Ephesians 5 • Starting with Ephesians 5:17 • One of the most common statements uttered by Christians “I don’t know what God’s will is for me” • Does it sound like He’s trying to hide it from you? • Go back one verse…redeem the time

  4. But I’m just a social drinker • Verse 18 is pretty straight forward • Other Biblical examples of God clear instructions • Prov 20:1, Prov 23:31-32, Isa 5:22 • And the dumb things they did • Gen 9:21, Gen 19:32-35, Luke 12:45 • Very clearly, sin begins as the result of excess, but the line is not a very clear one • And…Paul recommends a better way

Thanks abound • Psalms – songs that come from scripture and included in the inspired Word of God • Hymns – songs inspired by man’s desire to honor God in declaration of His goodness • Spiritual Songs – songs that erupt spontaneously with your own words, or could also be sung in your personal prayer language • Giving thanks always – reference Romans 1

Submitting to one another • Submission must be given and cannot be required • The opposite of submit is resist, so the verse could say do not resist one another • What types of defense mechanisms have you erected to “protect” yourself • I can forgive, but I won’t forget – simply means I will say I forgive you, but I will resist you in the future

The freedom of submission • Submission to God allows Him to take responsibility for you, your well being, your future – that of a bondservant • If you resist His authority, you are not under His protection • Submission is for everyone, from the greatest to the least • Heb 13:17, 1 Pet 2:13, 1 Pet 5:5, Phil 2:3, Rom 13

  8. Submission is an invitation • Matt 5:38-48 • We think that by resisting others and keeping up a defensive posture, we are protecting ourselves. We are actually robbing ourselves of true freedom in Christ. • What is the worst someone can do to you? • Matt 10:25-31
