2 young men killed… 4 badly injured… How did this happen?
A graded road. A truck making a lot of dust. The driver decides to overtake the truck. He drives into the DUST CLOUD!! Dust Hidden by the dust-cloud, is an oncoming truck..…
The result …. DEATH! How could the accident have been prevented ??
This could have been prevented by … … the Dust Code !
The 4WD driver should have followed the “Dust Code” • When you are behind a vehicle that makes • a dust cloud: • NEVER drive into the dust cloud: stay back !! • Stay at least 4 sec behind the dust cloud. • NEVER overtake in a dust cloud. 4 sec’sor more
The truck driver should have followed the“Dust Code” Safety Shoulder An oncoming vehicle creates a dust cloud:what do you do?
Safety Shoulder The windrow • Slow Down • Move overthe wind-row in plenty of time • Drive slowly along the safety shoulder • If you can not see or become disoriented: STOP • Move back onto the road when its clear
ONLY, only if you can NOT drive off the roadbecause of: high windrow, steep or no shoulder… • Move over as far right as possible • Slow Down to a crawl (less than 10 KPH) • Keep moving slowly until you can see clearly again • Only stop when you cannot see/loose orientation (there could be someone behind you…..)
If you are still here ….. You are too late !!!! Result!
The dust code when following a dust cloud: • Do not enter the dust cloud • Stay 4 Sec behind • Do not overtake
The dust code when a cloud comes towards you: • Slow down & pull over the windrow • Drive slowly along the safety shoulder • Move back onto the road when it is clear
