  2. Encomiendas 9.26 New World (skip 6-8 lines): why the encomienda was needed: encomiendas: caciques/ corregidores: problems on the encomienda:

  3. New World • name that Europeans gave North, Central, and South America. • coined by Italian explorer Amerigo Vespucci (America is named after him) • Old World  Europe

  4. New World (continued) • Spanish came to the New World for two main reasons: • money and natural resources (gold, silver) • Convert the Native Americans to Christianity (Catholicism) • huge conflict between Catholics vs. Protestants (Germans, English) vs. Muslims in Europe

  5. Jigsaw Reading • 1. There are FOUR sections of the reading. • 2. Divide up the reading with your group members. • 3. You are responsible for finding the answers to the questions. • 4. Share out with your partners  DO NOT simply copy; tell or verbally explain to one another the answer. You will NOT receive credit otherwise.

  6. Why Encomiendas Were Needed Indian slavery was abolished because Catholic monks/priests were upset that so many were dying from being overworked • needed to “civilize” the Native Americans • not enough labor (too few African slaves)

  7. Encomiendas Spanish word “entrustment” Started in Spain to reward soldiers who fought for the king against the Muslims Native Americans provided Spanish food/money/labor, while Spanish gave NAs protection and converted them to Christianity. encomendero: a businessman appointed by the Spanish gov’t to establish an encomienda.

  8. caciques and corregidores caciques: a NA leader who was the representative for his tribe corregidores: a Spaniard who managed the day-to-day running of the encomienda responsible for making sure that tributes were being paid and money was being made

  9. Problems on the Encomienda • Indians couldn’t produce enough food/money for the Spanish and were overworked • 50 to 90% of Mexico’s Native Americans killed by disease/overwork • many of the deaths were “unintentional”.

  10. Who is to blame for the deaths of millions of Indians in the New World? YOU MAY CHOOSE MORE THAN ONE. encomenderos, caciques, corregidores, Native Americans, money (economy), nobody

  11. Who is to Blame? • In your notebooks, make a pie chart assigning % blame. • Explain each of your choices. • Use TWO quotations TOTAL from the reading to support your reasoning.

  12. Homework (Due 9.26) • Were the deaths of millions of Indians on the encomiendas an act of genocide? Why or why not? • In a well-written paragraph, use at least TWO quotations/statistics in your response.
