  10. Education & Training A bachelor’s degree or higher is typically needed for a job as an author, writer, or editor. Many employers like to hire people with degrees in communications, journalism, or English. Writers who want to focus on writing about a particular topic may need formal training or experience related to that topic. The Internet and other media allow some people to gain writing experience. Some of this writing may lead to paid assignments without regard to the absence of a degree. Training and experience for author, writer, and editor jobs can be obtained by working on high school, college, and community newspapers, and radio and television stations. Many magazines, newspapers, and broadcast stations also have internships for students.

  11. Job Outlook & Availability Editors often employ others, such as interns, fact checkers, or editorial assistants, for some entry-level positions. While gaining practical experience, they may: carry out research and verify facts, dates, and statistics for other writers arrange page layouts of articles, photographs, and advertising compose headlines and prepare copy for printing. Editors held about 129,600 jobsin 2008. While 51 percent of salaried editors worked in the publishing, a large number of editors were also employed in other industries. Business, professional and social organizations, information services, and educational institutions employed editors to work on their publications or Web content.

  12. Employment is expected to grow at seven to thirteen percent annually. Competition is expected for writing and editing jobs as many people are attracted to this occupation. Writers and editors who have adapted to the new media and are comfortable writing for and working with a variety of electronic and digital tools will have an advantage in finding new work.

  14. Why this Profession? I’ve never had any clear idea on what profession I want to go into, or even what major I would like to pursue in college. A few years ago, my mom suggested that being an editor would be a good idea for me—because I’m always fixing her mistakes and am strong in English. She pointed out that I went to a lot of spelling bees in elementary and middle school and also was a reading fanatic. Sitting at desk surrounded by books all day sounded like a good idea to me, so I took her suggestion into consideration. It made sense, so I’ve been looking into English and Journalism majors (or at the least a Liberal Arts degree).

  21. Why Hire Me? Qualifications and Qualities: I have already held some jobs throughout the last five years or so. I’ve been a babysitter for family, friends, and neighbors since I was about 12 years old. I spent one year detasseling for Sloup/Thorell. Last summer, I was a WSIA at the Dowding Swimming Pool and assisted in teaching swimming lessons. I am currently employed at the Seward Café on the Square as a hostess and waitress. I’ve worked there for nearly 8 months and plan to continue until I go to college. I’ve also held many leadership positions throughout the various clubs and groups that I’m a part of at school, church, and in extracurricular activities. I’m hard-working, helpful, friendly, motivated, and a quick learner. I believe I would be a good hire in this occupation.
