League At A Glance VOLUME 20, ISSUE 2 NOVEMBER 2013 I hope you are enjoying the Fall season!  As we gear up for the holidays, may we remember the true importance of the season as we share special memories and events with family and friends and focus on the gift of giving!   The League has already been busy GIVING back to our community these past several months.  The 3rd Annual Touch A Truck Event was a success with a turnout of 750 people, despite the bad weather!  Thank you to the T-A-T Co-Chairs and Committee members for all of your hard work on this event!  The Foster Santa Breakfast Committee is gearing up for the December 7th event.  We anticipate another great year as 600 foster children and their families are treated to a gourmet breakfast, gifts, Santa and more! We continue to educate the membership on a new Issue Based Community Impact.  In January, the membership will vote on one of four selected categories that we will focus on as a League.  The IBCI will give the JLS a chance to fine tune our goals, by choosing an issue that is relevant to the needs of our community.  In turn, this will give our League a better strategy on future philanthropic, volunteer and fundraising events. Speaking of fundraising - All members and sustainers should have received our Annual Fund Drive Letter in the mail.  Please consider us this season as you decide where to GIVE.  As a League, we do a lot in our community and in helping others .  Our funding is stretched and we are always in need of ongoing financial support.  Every donation helps and is greatly appreciated and put to good use! We continue to have fantastic Meet & Greets for future Provisional members.  We are doing our best to have more interactive General Membership Meetings, including hearing from more local non profits and how we can help others.  We are also privileged to hear from a Sustainer at each meeting about her time in the League.  This is always interesting and inspiring.  I'm excited for what 2014 will bring The Junior League of Spokane!  Lets make it a great year!  Don't forget about the Holiday Luncheon on December 13th at The Spokane Club!   2. Weather Couldn’t Stop Touch-a-Truck 2013! Our third annual Touch-a-Truck event took place on Saturday, September 28 in the Spokane Community College main parking lot. Despite rain and wind all day long, over 700 people were in attendance. We were also able to donate 280 lbs of food to the Salvation Army’s food bank – that’s over 1300 lbs to date! Some highlights of the event were Tow Mater from the Cars movie, an armored truck from the Army Reserve, a vintage 1954 Greyhound bus, as well as a Raptor truck from Wendle Ford. Mascot sightings included Otto, Shox the Fox and Stitch the Trauma Bear. Next year’s event is scheduled for Saturday, September 27, 2014. We would like to thank our truck participants, donors, vendors, volunteers and incredible committee for making our 2013 event a resounding success.   3. 18th Annual Foster Santa Breakfast Saturday, December 7 9:30 a.m. - 12 noon Northern Quest Casino • Get involved by volunteering to help: - Set up the night before (start time is approximately 10:30 p.m.) -Help with finishing touches before breakfast (6:30 a.m. - 9 a.m.) - Help during the event and clean-up (9 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.) • Members can join us at our gift wrapping party at the November 19th GMM. Don’t forget to bring some fun Christmas gift wrap, tape and scissors to use as you help Santa prepare for the holiday rush. • Bring any new $5 parent gifts that you would like to donate to the general membership meeting on Nov. 19th. • All active members are invited to join together to sponsor the cost of high chairs and booster seats for the tiniest foster children to sit in, while not in Santa’s lap. Checks can be sent to the league office (made out to Junior League with Foster Santa and active member on the memo line). The cost is estimated to be $237. • Know someone interested in donating to help make this year’s event a success?   4. Membership News As we are moving towards the new year, the membership committee is finishing up training its first class of provisionals. We have been working on transitioning the trainings and requirements to fit the active schedules of our new members, and this year we will be welcoming two new classes into our League. The first class of ladies are meeting their requirements from September through November, and will be voted in at our January meeting. The second class of ladies are meeting their requirements from January through March, and will be voted in at our April meeting. This allows us to be more flexible and to increase the size of our League at a faster pace. We are very excited about the fabulous provisionals we have been working with, and they too are very excited to be involved with such a great organization.Do you know someone who would be an asset to the Junior League? It is time to recruit some energetic, talented women to join JLS and help us make an impact on our community. We have upcoming meet and greets planned for December 12th and January 7th and would love it if you would refer any friends or family who you think would be great additions to our League. Annual Fund DriveThis November, you will receive an invitation to participate in the Junior League of Spokane Annual Fund Drive. Did you know that our dues cover only a portion of the cost of running our organization? The Annual Fund Drive helps make up the difference. No matter the size, your gift is important. Our goal is to have 100% of our members participate this year. If each Active and Sustainer Member gave a gift in the range of $20 to the Annual Fund Drive, we would raise about $4,000. Your tax-deductible donation enables the Junior League of Spokane to promote voluntarism, to train women to be civic leaders, and to improve our community.   5. Dear Junior League Sustainers: We are just on the cusp of my favorite season of the year – the holidays!! Family coming home, special decorations, favorite recipes and gatherings that only happen once a year! That makes this time all the more significant. And one of my favorite events of the holiday season is the Junior League Holiday luncheon. Mark your calendars for Friday, December 13th at 11:30! Let’s have a great turnout to celebrate our traditions and honor another Outstanding Sustainer. Invitations will be coming in the mail. AJLI (I remember it as AJL!) is conducting a study of our lowered number of active members nationally by focusing on recent sustainers. Spokane is participating in this effort so a few of us are visiting with this group to help us understand this trend. We will be reporting back to you later in the spring. We are also excited to report that the number of Active members is up to 57, which includes nine new provisional and two transfers – one from Colorado and one from Dallas. There will be another class of Provisionals going through training in January, so this number will grow again. The more Active members and the more active Sustainer members we have, the more we can accomplish in the community. Speaking of that, our annual Foster Santa Breakfast will be on Saturday, December 7th this year, at Northern Qwest Casino. There are opportunities to volunteer to setup the evening before, to help at the brunch itself and to clean up! We have a wonderful group of Sustainers who work very hard on this project and they welcome more help! Please contact Colleen Sneider at 594- 0153. We have two Sustainers who are joining our ranks from other Leagues: Sarah English moved to Chewelah from living in Omaha for the past fifteen years. Originally from Richland, Sarah is a staunch Coug (her email address is crimgraycoug!) and will find many like-minded women among our Sustainers! She is now the library manager of the Chewelah branch of the Libraries of Stevens County. Weekends are spent cheering on WSU and catching up with old friends. Sarah is looking forward to helping with the Foster Santa Breakfast and sharing what she learned from her time in the Junior League of Omaha. She loves the Red Wagon, especially when she learned it was a Junior League project. Welcome, Sarah!! Paige McKee moved to Spokane in 2007 from Boise. She and her husband Kevin have three children, all in college this year, so she has time again for the Sustainer group. Paige is employed as the Executive Administrator of the Episcopal Diocese of Spokane, but has also found time for the Spokane Arts Commission and the Design Review committee for the City of Spokane. While her children were students at Lewis and Clark, she was very active in junior golf. While in Boise, she served on the Executive Board of the Junior League as well as membership, thrift shop and fundraising. Paige is a busy lady who likes to get things done! The perfect Sustainer!
