  1. Unit 4 Assessment 10/21/13

  2. Warm-up • Take 3 minutes to study for you assessment. • Cut, paste, copy, clipboard, find and replace, spell check, research, hyperlinks, document properties.

  3. Complete ICAP research • In order to plan out your PSA’s, use this time to finish any research needed. • If you are finished with your timeline research, you may practice keyboarding.

  4. Keyboarding test I am writing this letter to you so that you can see how well I have learned to keyboard. It is a lot of fun to learn to keyboard, but it also takes a lot of work. One nice thing is that everyday it gets a little easier. At first I typed very slowly and did not even know where all the keys were without looking. Now I can type any letter without looking at the keyboard. My speed is getting better, but I don’t really try to type fast.

  5. Media Literacy: Support your position • When you hear the word Vampire, what comes to mind?

  6. Media Literacy: Support your position • Today we are going to read an article about vampire bats in Panama. • Background: Panama is located close to the equator and has a tropical climate. • Annotate: highlight, circle, or underline main points or arguments the article is trying to make.

  7. Media Literacy: Support your position • Drawing conclusions: Based on the information in the article, formulate your position on the argument. • In pairs, skim through the article again searching for the evidence that will support your claim. • You may choose to highlight this evidence in a different color.

  8. Media Literacy: Support your position • Example: • Position = Most bats are harmless • Evidence: • Article states that out of 1000 known bat species, only 3 are blood sucking. • The zoologist hand feed bats and describes them as peaceful and cuddly • Personal Background: I’ve been to a cage less bat exhibit. If they wanted to, the bats could fly right at visitors and attack them, but they don’t. In fact, the bats ignore the people. • Did I convince you? Explain.

  9. Media Literacy: Support your position • Vampire bats are dangerous to cattle • Farmers should have a right to catch and kill bats • Bats are important to research • Bats contribute to local ecology • People don’t know much about bats • Bat’s natural habitat is being destroyed • Cattle herding is inappropriate for the environment in Panama • Killing vampire bats is cruel • Vampire bats may turn out to be important to people.
