  3. QUICK HISTORY LESSON • Church of England set up the National Society in 1811. • As the beginnings of universal education “Education for the poor in accordance with rights, practice and doctrine of the C of E…” Be the Best You Can, Guided by God

  4. QUICK HISTORY LESSON • By 1851 census the church had; 17,000 schools 956,000 pupils being taught • Bolney school founded in 1871. Mr McArthur became Head in 1872…. • Gradual nationalisation with Local Education Authorities starting in 1902 • 1944 Education Act saw the start of the “Dual system” of LA and Church running schools together.   5. CURRENT FUNDING SYSTEM Department of Education (D of E) sets funding for each school. This money is paid to LA to administer LA Top slices some funding to provide services Local Authority delivers schools budget share to Schools Schools use funds to run the school Be the Best You Can, Guided by God

  6. CURRENT GOVERNANCE SYSTEM LOCAL AUTHORITY RESPONSIBLE FOR MONITORING SCHOOL PERFORMANCE AND SUPPORTING GOVERNING BODIES. (MORE RECENTLY THE EMPHASIS OF MANAGING PERFORMANCE IS ON THE GOVERNING BOARD) GOVERNING BODY SETS STRATEGIC DIRECTION AND MONITORS PERFORMANCE HEAD TEACHER AND SENIOR LEADERSHIP TEAM DAILY MANAGEMENT OF SCHOOL Be the Best You Can, Guided by God

WHAT IS AN ACADEMY? • Academies are publicly funded independent state schools. • Funding comes directly from central government rather than via the Local Authority. • BASICALLY A LIMITED LIABILITY PARTNERSHIP (LLP) OR TRUST IS FORMED TO MANAGE THE SCHOOL WITH TRUSTEES INSTEAD OF GOVERNORS.   10. WHAT IS AN ACADEMY? Academies have freedom • from Local Authority ‘control’. • to adapt or vary the National Curriculum. • to change length/timing of school day/term/year. • to choose their provider across a wider range of services. Be the Best You Can, Guided by God
