Gen. 3:15 A CAPSULATION OF HUMAN HISTORY: God’s work of Redemption through Eve’s descendant, Satans attempts to destroy God’s work. Mankind, Satan at war! LIT: “Crush” Head (NASB) = Col. 2:15 BUT: Only 1 of Eve’s Descendants. • Serpent = proper name of devil, not a “snake”: • v.14 laguage figureative; snakes don’t “eat dust”; means “defeated” • See Is. 49:23; Ps. 72:9; Mic. 7:16,17 • Conci: The proper name by which he was known to Eve (Rev.12:10) • Thus v.14 curse appies to Satan; le., aitho he’s highest, he’ll be lowest • v.15 sketches how this judgement will take place: a descendant of Eve. “bruise” heel = non-fatal = @ cross

V.6 “The People” = Israelites V8. Apparently, made bold claims about He & God = SARCASM. V9 “Bring me forth from the womb” = Virgin birth? V9 Special relationship of trust & closeness since birth: (NOT David’s case, see Ps.51:5) V15 “Dust of death” – DIES: David never did this way V16 “pierced” – See NASB note #2, Masoretic text rendering, but LXX (200 BC) has “pierced”. V.1-7 Describe this one’s authority and absolute rulership V.4 “will not change his mind” = Unconditional “priest forever” PROBLEM: Priests were Levites, Kings are from Judah; cf 2 Chron. 26:16-18. This person is both. 2 Chron. 26:16-18 But when he became strong, his heart was so proud that he acted corruptly, and he was unfaithful to the Lord his God, for he entered the temple of the Lord to burn incense on the altar of incense. [17] Then Azariah the priest entered after him and with him eighty priests of the Lord, valiant men. [18] They opposed Uzziah the king and said to him, "It is not for you, Uzziah, to burn incense to the Lord, but for the priests, the sons of Aaron who are consecrated to burn incense. Get out of the sanctuary, for you have been unfaithful and will have no honor from the Lord God." Psalm 110
Isaiah 7 Background v.1-3 Israel, Syria join forces; ask Judah to join. Backgr: 2 Chron. 28:16 Ahaz & Assyrians forming a coalition.
Isaiah 7 • Backgr: 2 Chron. 28:16 Ahaz & Assyrians forming a coalition. • V.3ff Isaiah’s Message: • V6 Davidic line threatened: becomes Isaiah’s focus to “house of Davide” message in v.13,14 • V9 “Ie, Believe in God, not man!” = thrust • V.11 God offers proof for trusting in Him. • V.12 Ahaz displays false humility, actually doesn’t want to listen to God’s msg. • V13 Rebuked for forming coalition, having alternative plans in place. • V14 Sign given to House of David (v13,2) to console re: v.6 threat. • V.15 Impoverished times, don’t come about until after v.16 destruction (cf. v22 curds & hoey) • V16 2 Kings = Syria & Israel, destroyed 4 yrs after Hezekiah becomes King (2Ki.18:9)
Isaiah 7 Issues • Liberals reject Messianic interpretation: • Virgin (HEB: “alaman” can mean “young maiden” • Sign was given contemporary with Ahaz (v11) • Response: • #2 rejected because the sign was refused by Ahaz; so Is. Gives it to the House of Davide instead (v13) • #2 isn’t true, because this child would not be a contemporary of Ahaz. • #1 “Alaman” is the closest Heb. Word to “virgin”. LXX Translates “virgin” – GK: “partheonos”). • #1 is absurd because there’s no “sign” here, no miracle, no proof of God’s hand.
Is. 9:6 Virgin birth • v.1,2 talks about the Galileean ministry of Christ • Zeb & Napth were shafted by land allotments: 1st to be conquered, but will be made up because they’ll be the 1st to see the Messiah • V.1 Christ’s Galillean Ministry • V2 they’re the first ones to get the light • V.2,3 Gap appears inbetween: 2 comings of Christ. • proof: Mat. 4:15,16 says so. • V.5,7 Millenial Kingdom (v5 end of wars) • V.3-5 are true because of v6-7 • V.6 The reason for the “joy” in v.2ff • V6 “government” see also 10:20-1 = Millenial Promise • V.7 Davidic Covenant. • see John 7:41,42 (Applic: Deliberate hardness of heart on Pharasee’s part) • (cf Micah 5:2) • POINT: passage teaches his humanity and deity

Is. 61 • V1: there are 2 persons: Spirit of the Lord God & “Me” • V8 1st person = God, no break in Context; therefore the trinity, or at least a duality
Why Two Servants? • Both servants are carrying out God's plan of redemption on earth • Isaiah is a book re: judgement of God's 1st servant (Jacob); • Intermixed is description of 2nd servant (who completes the task) • You can't sell this message easily to an unbelieving Jew because the key to interpreting is the NT.
Background: writing 700’s bc., in Judah, predicting N.,S., conquests Ch.4:1 Break: “The last days” 1-8 = millenial kingdom 9 Jews need a king to usher this in (ie., Christ) 10 Going to Babylon first 4:11—5:1 returns to last days discussion and war 5:1 “Muster” means get ready to fight; “smite judge” is enemy’s plan 5:2—5 this is when the promised king will arrive leads to victory v.3 “she in labor” is Israel (c.4:10) distressed until arrival of King v.3 “his bretheren” = messiah’s brethren v.4 “they will remain” = reversal of v.3a “He will give them up...” cf.Zech.12:10 “they will look on him whom they have pierced” at 2nd advent APPLICATION OF PASSAGE: Comes from Bethlehem; (Mt.2:6) Clearly teaching a pre—existence to birth; CONCL: more than human! Zech 9 • v.1—7 Predicts alexander’s conquest of Tyre (Ez.26) and Philistia. • v.8 predicts God providentially sparing Israel • History: Jews showed Alexander the Daniel prophecies regarding him, and be left them alone • Break at end of v.8 “Any more... • oppressors did pass thru after Alexander! eq., Romans • it’s because he’s “seen with my eyes. What did he see? v.9,10 • v.9 = humble, suffering servant • v.10 = the anticipated king which had been propbecied Mic.5:2; Is.9, etc • Jewish interpretation • They’ve always looked at this as messianic passage • these are 2 different pictures of Messiah • It depended on wether tbey’re sinful as a nation or not as to which one they get.
