About the Network Background Dec 3-5, 2006: Santa Cruz +10, First Inter-American Meeting of Ministers and High-level Authorities of Sustainable Development; Jun 5, 2007: XXXVII (AG/Res. 2314), OAS Member States resolved to“recognize the Inter-American Network for DisasterMitigation (INDM) as the permanent hemisphericmechanism for strengthening practical cooperationamong intergovernmental agencies in the area ofdisaster reduction, especially by sharing technicalinformation and best practices”. Mission Toestablish a Hemispheric Platform for practical cooperation among governmental and inter-governmental agencies in the area of disaster mitigation. The Network seeks to advance the exchange of lessons learned and good practices, the establishment of a pool of experts and a network of decision and policy-makers, capable to support the formulation of public policy and plans for the reduction of disasters. An Institutional Network to advance practical cooperation ... Not a social Network .

Inter-Governmental Segment NGO Segment University Segment National Operational Focal Points (NOFP) International Cooperation Segement IFI Segment Private Sector Segment WHO CAN BECOME A MEMBER? Any organization that advocates,supports and/or actively participatesin Natural Disaster Risk Management. The Organizations interested in becomingmembers will need to send a letter with abrief background to the Technical Secretariat,c/o GS/OAS.

What’s ahead? 1An online Dynamic InstitutionalMapping Tool (DIMT): Anonline relational database withmultiple functions and tools fornetworking among organizations,individuals –experts andpolicy-makers, and for surfingmultiple information sources. Calendar of Events. 2An online Virtual DiscussionForum Platform forthe exchange and sharingof practical experiencesand lessons learned, whichthrough expert judgment andcriteria provide the bases forthe identification and replicationof “good” practices. i.e. Flood EWS, CQA, Public-private partnerships, School Retrofiting, etc. 3Face-to-face ThematicEncounters for promotingexchanges and sharing ofpractical as well as policyexperience and the identificationof South-South CooperationInitiatives (SSCI). Thisactivity feeds into the VirtualForum and vice versa, asVirtual Forums may result inthe identification of specificcooperation initiatives. i.e. Second Hemispheric Encounter on “Cost-Benefit Analysis: Making a case to invest on Vulnerability Reduction in the Americas” 4South-South CooperationInitiatives drawn from face-to-face Thematic Encountersand Virtual DiscussionForums. Expert support for the formulation of project proposals, and mutual cooperation 5Training and capacitybuilding within specific areas,partnering with Centersof Excellence in High-techApplications related toDisaster Mitigation. Alsopartnering with Leading Institutions(involved in PolicyFormulation), Universitiesand ResearchInstitutionsspecializing in Risk ManagementPolicy. i.e. Workshop on Applying Remote Sensing Technology for Flood Risk Management, National Commission on Space Activities (CONAE) of Argentina
