  1. What is usability testing in software testing? What is usability testing? It is a testing method that verifies the user-friendliness of a software product or application. A group of users are selected to test the product in a real-time environment and check the functionality, usability and user experience of a product or application. User feedback is provided based on which the team will make the necessary modifications and corrections to further modify the quality of the product. Develop a well-defined plan: 1 The goals and objectives of usability testing need to be determined in this step. The objectives of the system and crucial functionalities need to be properly analyzed. The testers need to be allotted the assigned tasks to exercise these crucial functionalities. Test report formats, the number and demographics of usability testers and the usability testing method are the important constraints that should be taken into consideration. Selecting the right testers: 2 As per the usability test plan, the required number of testers can be recruited. Their expertise, knowledge etc., should be taken into consideration. Executing tests: 3 In this step, the execution of usability tests takes place Analyzing the data: 4 The data obtained from usability is thoroughly scrutinized so that meaningful inferences can be derived. Upon that, actionable recommendations are also provided so that the overall usability of the product is improved. Reporting: 5 All the important findings obtained from the usability test are shared with all the concerned stakeholders which include CEO, client, developer, designer, product owner etc. Following are the two techniques of usability testing: Remote usability testing: 1 Testers and observers are remotely located. The system under test is accessed remotely by the testers and assigned tasks are performed. Testers’ facial expressions, screen activity, voice etc., are recorded by automated software. The data is analyzed by the observers. Lab usability testing: 2 A separate lab environment is set up to conduct usability testing in the presence of observers. Specific tasks need to be executed by the testers. The tester’s behavior needs to be monitored by the observers and the outcome of the testing should be documented. While the testing process is taking place, the observers remain silent.
