Introduction Welcome to Materials Processing. There are many different types of wood. We will be working with several different types in class this year, so lets take time to explore them.
Task You will be working with a partner to find out about different types of wood. Each group will be doing a different type. You will need to find out where the tree grows, what type of wood it is, and what it is used for. Once you have found all the needed information you will be completing a poster about your type of wood.
Procedure • Pick a partner. • Look at the list of woods below and choose one. (Have a back-up choice) -White Pine -Red Pine -Red Cedar -Blue Spruce -Maple -Cherry -Red Oak -White Oak -White Birch -Poplar -Plywood -Veneer -Particle Board -Chipboard -Masonite -MDF • When you have chosen one raise your hand to have it okayed by the teacher. (Only one group per type of wood)
Procedure • Look at the different websites on the following pages to find the following information: • Name of the wood • What kind of wood • Hard, soft, or composite • A picture • Where you find the wood or how it is made • What do you do with this kind of wood • Interesting facts • Design a poster from the information that you have learned. • Present your groups poster to the class.
