What is a fishbowl conversation? A fishbowl conversation is just what it sounds like. It’s all about changing the format of a discussion so everyone gets a chance to participate in a meaningful, quality conversation. THE SET UP Two Circles: Inner circle: The speakers Outer circle: The listeners THE RULES • Only the people in the inner circle may speak. • The people in the outer circle listen until it is their turn to be in the inner circle. • (This means everyone participates in both circles by the end of the class)
Your Task: Persuade others that your hero should be nominated for ISM hero of the year.. INNER CIRCLE (Speakers) • Opening Statements • No one can speak until all statements are finished! • Open Discussion OUTER CIRCLE (Listeners) • Note the important points the speakers make. • How tools of persuasion used? • Who was the best advocate for their hero? • Why do you think this? • Questions?
Your tasktoday: • Start preparing for Fishbowls! • Tools and language of persuasion • Opening statements • ONE notecard – no bigger than your face! • We will do a practice run • in our last class meeting this week.
Fishbowl Fundamentals: Speakers • Only one person speaks at a time. • In order to speak, you need to use strategies like body language and eye contact to let others know you want a turn • Only say meaningful things • P.E.E! • Point/Evidence/Explanation • Be respectful in your comments and questions • Utilize persuasive language whenever possible! Listeners • Listen actively, listen carefully, listen critically • Make notes of important points • Analyze what the speakers are saying and how they are saying it • Do you agree? Disagree? Why or why not?
