The Level 1 Exam 2010
What do each of the underlined words mean? Describe the techniques, elements, conventions and technologies of drama in a new context and reflect on performance
What do each of the underlined words mean? Identify (USING DRAMA TERMS), describe what you know about explain what EFFECT is created Drama from creating it yourself or how do they create a ‘world’ in their play Seeing it in a photograph as seen in the photograph Describe the techniques, elements, conventions and technologies of drama in a new context and reflect on performance A new context is what they have given you you will need to reflect on to look at. It is unseen by you before. work you have done and performance This year it is photographs. uou have seen.
There will be two questions. We know this, because NZQA has told us. ‘Questions’ are like sections of the exam; an A and a B, with lots of little questions in them
In Question One, candidates will be required to use the photographs to: • describe and apply techniques, elements, conventions and technologies of drama to the convention of 'Chorus' • identify and describe the specific use and effect of these in the photographs
What this means in student speak • You need to know what a chorus is and why you would use it. • You need to look at a photo of a chorus and explain how the actors are using drama techniques to create the chorus and what ideas are shown because of it. • You need to be able to link this is with how technologies are adding to the chorus. Or how other conventions are being used alongside the chorus. What elements are being created through the use of the chorus? • You need to explain how you would use a piece of script to create a chorus. How you would use techniques in that performance.
Practise questions • Identify the drama techniques that are being used to create a chorus. • Identify the drama technologies that are being used to create a chorus. • Describe in detail how these techniques are being used. • Explain what ideas are being shown in the photograph through the chorus. Ie how are they creating focus? How does the use of the chorus tell us something about a role? How does the use of chorus create tension? What mood is being created? Use the photos that follow to study and practise.
You have done this in drama in year 10 and in year 11 You just do it, rather than write it. You are not doing anything new. You are all very good at this!
How you can study • Do these practise questions and send them to your teacher. Make sure you make it clear what photograph you are using. • Make sure you know what features are related to a chorus and you know why they are used. • Remember when you have used chorus techniques. Draw a picture of what you did and use this to answer the questions.
In Question Two candidates will be required to reflect on the use of drama technologies in: • their own drama work and • a live performance they have seen. Candidate responses may vary in format, for example: • note form • sketches • paragraphs.
What this means in student speak • You need to go back to a time when you used technologies (costume, props, set) some time this year and think about • Identifying what technology you used • Describing how you used it • What effects were created by using the technology ie did it create focus on something? Did it emphasise something about a role? Did it create tension? Did it help create a setting? Did it create a mood?
What this means in student speak • Remember when you went to see The Arrival. • Identify a technology that was used • Describing how they used it in a particular moment • What effects were created by using the technology ie did it create focus on something? Did it emphasise something about a role? Did it create tension? Did it help create a setting? Did it create a mood? • You need to be able to articulate a theme or an idea about the play. You need to be able to explain how the use of the technology showed this idea.
Try completing this diagram How all the features combine to create an idea in the performance
How you can study – techniques • Pick a moment where an actor creates a memorable moment. • Draw their body position • Around it, annotate how they use any drama techniques • Explain what it shows about their character • Make a link to this moment in relation to the world of the play.
How you can study – technologies • Pick a moment where a technology creates a memorable moment. • Draw the stage and the technology use • Around it, annotate what is happening • Explain what the technology does to create an element ie focus, role, tension, mood • Make a link to this moment in relation to the world of the play.
