  3. What does it stand for? • Tanka translates as “short song” in Japanese

  4. Why do it? • You write a tanka poem for a special event or to provoke a strong feeling.

  5. What is the form? • A tanka consists of 31 syllables • 5 • 7 • 5 • 7 • 7

  6. First you need to think of a theme • When I say the word beach what words come to mind?

  7. Example • Pebbles on the beach (5) • Pierce through our heels as we walk (7) • A mild price to pay (5) • For the damage we subject (7) • It to by littering waste. (7)

  8. Ready to try? • YES!!!!!

  9. Close your eyes! • YES YOU!!!!

  10. Imagine… • You are a kite….what does it feel like both physically and mentally? • Yes, personification…..

  11. Brainstorm • Now list all the words that are coming to mind!

  12. Draft • Use your imagination and play with those words! • TANKA-FY IT BABY!!! • 5,7,5,7,7

  13. Homework • Rough draft poem due tomorrow! • Be prepared to partner up • Check your notes to make sure you have the right syllable pattern and that you have evoked the feeling of what it would be like to be a kite!
