The Finished ProductThe Analogy: It was like Building a House • Step 1: Talk about what you want the ‘house’ to be able to do • Step 2: Location, Location, Location • Step 3: Architecture • Step 4: Build it • Step 5: Modify The finished product is called a blog (like a website , only easier to create) & will be seen by the world wide web (eg: parents) - created by steps 1 – 5 - This is where kids draft / brainstorm / edit their ideas for the official blog pages content. This is called a wiki (like butchers paper we use in a classroom)
Step 1: Talk about what you want the ‘house’ to be able to do For our year 9 commerce classes, two teachers sat down & discussed for about 30minutes - 1 hour how we could use the internet, & websites (ie: websites created by everyday people are called blogs), & laptops to teach the subject: “running a business:. Things we mentioned included: it had to be able to sell a product it had to be able to encourage student brainstorming it had to have different ‘rooms’ for business departments it had to display students work and effort for parents / friends • TIPS / SUGGESTIONS: • Take an hour to chat about if you want a workspace for the students to brainstorm any ideas / opinions / answers / discussions (ie: create a wiki) (which, acts like butchers paper within a classroom just the kids can do this anytime, anywhere – they no longer have to be sitting in a physical group); do you want a workspace to display your students work each week / term / year so parents and relatives can see anytime (ie: create a blog) (like websites and become the outside of your house) • Look at websites that promote your subject / topic area What do you like about the webpage? Get ideas.
Step 2: Location, Location, Location Once, you have some ideas about what you might be able to do with your class online, you have to get an address for where it will be located. So, you need to do the following: Like in your staffroom, you have your desk where you keep all your folders, books, pens etc, each day before class, recess, lunch etc, you go to your desk … online the equivalent is called your READER …. goto: www.netvibes.comsetup an account (this becomes your ‘desk’ where all your ‘subjects’ (ie: wikis, blogs) online will be stored so you can grab any ‘subject’ you want quickly ). Like the folders on your desk with front covers etc…online the equivalent is called an EDUBLOG …. goto: www.edublogs.org setup an account. (You may eventually make different edublogs as per each subject or class you teach, just like your folders). Like the blank scribble paper on your desk which, you use to help students at recess / lunch / in classtime to explain / brainstorm / discuss thoughts & answers …. Online the equivalent is called a WIKI …. goto: www.wikispaces.comsetup an account TIP: keep usernames & passwords the same for easy remembering
Step 3: Architecture Choose the colour scheme and theme to represent your subject or class; how many rooms will be in this house ie: how many different tabs or pages do you want such as:
Step 4: Build it This is the easy & fun part! Just login into your edublog page and start putting in your tabs or page names, play around with different themes, see how they look when you press the “save” or “publish” button. The most important thing for you to do is type in the ACCEPTABLE USER POLICY or RULES to using this medium. You can then write in material yourself, cut, paste, type, edit, put photos … or get the kids to decide the content.

Step 5: Implement, Control, & Modify How I foresee the commerce classroom in Term 3 proceeding: Introduce wikis / blogs; acceptable user policy; brainstorm what they know / do not know about ICT; have mock computer lab lessons as practice for term 4; homework will be to use the wiki. How I foresee the commerce classroom in Term 4 proceeding: 15 minute blocks: block 1: (start at desks with books / pens out, normal intro of lesson material), block 2: go to laptop position for research or typing or wiki work; block 3: back to desks to close lesson. classroom area student desks panels for laptops laptops allocated positions teacher desk front of room entrance
