James Garfield 1881 - 8 months • Republican • Gave most government jobs to Republicans who wanted reform • His VP Chester Arthur had the support of the Stalwarts who did not want reform • Garfield was shot and he died 2 months later
Chester Arthur 1881-1885 • Republican • To the shock of his Stalwarts he decided to work for reform!! • Passed the Pendleton Act 1883 • had to take a test to get a government job!!!! • Why did he go against his supporters? • He did this because he knew he was dying of kidney disease!
