Michigan & Emerald Ash Borer • 75 % of new infestations are associated with campgrounds and recreational areas • 80 % have been traced to firewood • Other state discoveries ALL have major campgrounds near the sites
Green Mountain National ForestStarting July 17, 2009 • Locally purchased • Kiln-dried with original packaging and label • Untreated, non local transport up to $5,000 or up to 6 months in jail
Currently in Vermont State Parks • No firewood from outside the 50 mile radius is not allowed • Visitors that have firewood will be asked to exchange for park firewood • Collected firewood is sealed in plastic bags and will be destroyed
Non State/Federal Campgrounds • Public Relations • Don’t Move Firewood Campaign • “We need a statewide/federal quarantine…people think we just want to sell our own firewood and make all sorts of money”. (private campground owner)
