United States Seal (front) • Do you see a pattern of thirteen in the Great Seal? • 13 stars in the crest above the eagle • 13 stripes in the shield upon the eagle's breast • 13 arrows in the eagle's left claw • 13 olives and leaves in the eagles' right claw • 13 letters in the motto carried by the eagle, E Pluribus Unum (out of many, one).
United States Seal (back) • The seal is on the back of a $1 bill. • It has a pyramid with 13 steps. • The “eye of provident” is God watching us. • Novus Ordo Seclorum, means "New Order of the Ages" or a new beginning for America.
The Liberty Bell • The bell was made in 1752. • It was rung when the Declaration of Independence was signed. • The bell was rung every 4th of July until a crack developed in 1846. • It represents liberty (freedom).
Roses • The rose became the official flower of the United States in 1986. • It is a symbol of love, beauty, and politics.
The Bald Eagle • “Bald" does not mean that this bird lacks feathers. It is a multiple meaning word that means “white.” • It became a symbol in 1782. • It represents strength, courage, and freedom.
Lady Justice • This national symbol represents the fairness. • She is carrying scales that represent “balance” in all things. • She is blindfolded in order to be fair to EVERYONE. • She has a sword to defend everyone’s rights.
Uncle Sam • This national symbol represents the GOVERNMENT. • He wants YOU to be a good citizen.
American Flag • There are 13 stripes representing the original 13 colonies. • There are 50 stars representing the 50 states. • White stands for purity • Red stands for bravery • Blue stands for justice
Memorials • A memorial is something that is built to remind us of someone or something important. (memory) • Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia is a memorial for people who died in war.
Jefferson Memorial • This memorial honors the life of Thomas Jefferson. • It is located in Washington, D.C.
Lincoln Memorial • This memorial honors the life of Abraham Lincoln. • It is located in Washington, D.C.
Mount Rushmore • This memorial honors the lives of four presidents: Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt, George Washington • It is located in South Dakota
Statue of Liberty • The Statue of Liberty was given to us as a gift to represent friendship by France in 1885. • It is in New York. • It is the first thing immigrants see when they come by boat to the US. It represents freedom and democracy.
Washington Memorial • This memorial honors the life of George Washington. • It is located in Washington, D.C.
