General Info • Size: 28-40 in. tall • Wingspan: 1.8-2.3 m • Weight: 5.5-15lbs. • Migration: Not all eagles migrate, they fallow food, so as lakes and rivers freeze they travel south • They don’t hibernate or estivate • Special Feature: 8-10 times better eyesight then humans for hunting, very sharp and strong talons and beak • There are about 9,789 nesting pairs in the lower 48 states according to the most recent study
Habitat • Prefers habitats near seacoasts, rivers, lakes, and other large bodies of water
Diet and Reproduction • They are carnivores and they eat fish, rabbits, hares, raccoons, muskrats, beavers, deer fawns, grebes, alcids, ducks, gulls, coots, egrets, and geese • They have internal reproduction and have oviparity • They do take care of their young and have a lifetime mate unless one dies
Human Impact • The use of DDT made adult eagles have a calcium deficiency that made their eggs too brittle • We lessened our use of DDT and the population has since risen • They have been removed from the endangered/threatened list
