HEALTH & SAFETY • Workshop induction
COMPUTERS, DISPLAY MONITORS AND PRINTERS CAN BE DANGEROUS IF NOT HANDLED PROPERLY Hazards Magazine, http://www.hazards.org/workstations/index.htm
COMPUTER EQUIPMENT USES AND STORES ELECTRICITY • YOU CAN RECEIVE AN ELECTRIC SHOCK OR BURN FROM EQUIPMENT EVEN IF IT IS TURNED OFF AND DISCONNECTED FROM THE MAINS
YOU CAN EASILY DAMAGE EQUIPMENT AND COMPONENTS BY HANDLING THEM WHEN UNPROTECTED
STOP AND ASK IF YOU ARE NOT SURE OF THE CORRECT SAFETY PROCEDURES
SAFE PRACTICE • Turn off and unplug all equipment before starting work • When you open the computer and remove parts, keep all of the screws in a safe place (egg boxes/screw holders can be provided)
HIGH VOLTAGE • Never open up a power supply unless you know how to discharge the capacitors (they can burn you and melt screwdrivers) • Never open up a CRT monitor (they hold a charge of up to 20,000 volts for some time after being turned off)
HEAT • Do not touch the inside components of a laser printer immediately after use as there will be a danger of burns; allow several minutes for the fuser to cool
ESD • Always conduct work on internal components wearing a ESD wrist strap • Do NOT wear an ESD strap when the computer/printer is switch on- high voltage equipment could conduct a high voltage through you.
‘Don’t’S • Do not put fingers or tools into moving parts • Do not look directly into a laser (Printer and Switch equipment) • Do not shake or turn a toner cartridge upside down or blow into a clogged ink jet cartridge • Do not work on equipment when you are tired
‘Do’s • You are responsible for you own safety and those around you. • Be tidy and secure the equipment and area before leaving • When dealing with specialist equipment like a laser printer or an uninterruptible power supply - read the product manual and documentation before you start. • Please take care when manoeuvring chairs on hard floor T104 they can move very quickly on this surface.
Daily procedures • You are responsible for making saved copies of your work; your personal drive will be backed up by the college IT department. • Ensure that all files are saved in the correct format (rtf, 2003), so that they can be read at the college, Google docs can be used to save files that will be accessible at home (an Internet connection is required) and at the college.
Toolkits • Ensure that the toolkit is complete and there are no pieces missing before returning. • Ensure all toolkits are returned to the storage shelf at the end of each session. • Please ensure that your computers are either logged off (at the end of the session) or switched off (at the end of the day).
