  1. Lesson 05.2 - Introduction to Operating System (OS) - OS Interface Environment

  2. LEARNING AREA >> System Software >> Functions of Operating System >> The Differences Between Dos And Windows Display >> OS Interface Environment

  3. LEARNING OUTCOME • STUDENT SHOULD BE ABLE TO: a. Define operating system b. State the function of operating system

  4. INTRODUCTION

  5. SYSTEM SOFTWARE • System software consists of programs that control the operations of the computer and its devices. • System software serves as the interface between the user, the application software and the computer hardware.

  6. SYSTEM SOFTWARE • 2 Types of system software • Operating System b. Utility Programmes

  7. OPERATING SYSTEM • Program that is loaded into the computer • Coordinates all the activities among computer hardware devices. • Controls the hardware in the computer, peripherals, manages memory and files. • Enables the user to communicate with the computer and other software

  8. OPERATING SYSTEM • Example :

  9. UTILITY PROGRAMMES • Utility programmesallows user to perform maintenance-type tasks. • It has been integrated into most major operating systems such as format, check and defragment disks

  10. UTILITY PROGRAMME • Example:

  11. Functions Of Operating System WHEN Turn on the Computer It loads the operating system into the computer's memory, also called booting Booting means to load and initialize the operating system on a computer machine

  12. Functions Of Operating System 3. It can happen in two ways: warm boot or cold boot. Warm Boot Cold Boot

  13. Functions Of Operating System Warm Boot : >> A warm boot means restarting a computer that is already on. >>It normally happens after installing a new software or hardware or after an application crashes or stops working.

  14. Functions Of Operating System COLD BOOT : >> A cold boot means starting a computer that is already off. >> It happens when we turn on a computer that has been completely powered off.

  15. OS Interface Environment The user interface typically enables users: to start an application program to manage disks and files such as formatting, copying and renaming to shut down the computer safely by following the correct procedures

  16. OS Interface Environment There are three types of user inter face : Menu - Driven GUI Command-Line # Graphical User Interface (GUI)

  17. DOS Vs Windows

  18. Characteristics Of Os Environment Based (GUI) Graphical User Interface (GUI) is an interface that combines text, graphic and icons to make software easier to be used. It I s also called ‘user-friendly’.

  19. Characteristics GUI Interact with the software Controls how you enter data and how the screen displays information Represent computer resources such as files, programs and network communication
