science for a changing world Types and Varieties of Terminology Resources A Taxonomy of Knowledge Organization Systems Gail Hodge Consultant to USGS BIO/NBII Information International Associates, Inc. 14 April 2004
Functions of Knowledge Organization Systems (KOSs) • Bridge between a user’s information need and a collection • Organize and describe content or a domain of knowledge • Provide consistency by controlling the terms used in a specific metadata elements • Support automated processes – retrieval, display, presentation (e.g., web site taxonomies, categorization, etc.)
Characteristics of a KOS • Content • Particular field of knowledge or activity • Facet of information • Gazetteers = Location • Thesauri = Subject • Authority Files = Organizations or Personal Names • Audience and function • Structure • Flat, hierarchical, networked • Depth versus breadth • Granularity or specificity of terms • Pre- or post- coordination of terms • May include definitions or scope statements
Taxonomy of KOSs1 • Term Lists • Authority Files • Glossaries • Gazetteers • Dictionaries • Classification & Categorization • Subject Headings • Classification/Categorization Schemes & Taxonomies • Relationship Groups • Thesauri • Semantic Networks • Ontologies 1Hill, Linda & Gail Hodge. Implications for this Conference • Take a broad approach to the definition of terminology • Some approaches and technologies may be more applicable to certain KOS types • Consider the need to be precise as to what type of terminology you are discussing
