UNIVERSIDADE DO ALGARVE THE ARGUMENT Geographical distribution Is there a problem with local medicine? Can a medical school influence local medicine?
UNIVERSIDADE DO ALGARVE Is there a need to evaluate the state of medical training in Portugal? Is there a point in trying new approaches to training in Portugal?
UNIVERSIDADE DO ALGARVE • A preliminary survey showed that: • There were good resources for basic sciences teaching • There were limited and patchy clinical resources • The best clinical resources were in the primary care sector
UNIVERSIDADE DO ALGARVE • Based on the survey, we decided: • To limit new admissions to 25 students per year • To opt for a graduate-entry only admissions policy • To design a curriculum to run over 3 years tuition plus a foundation year • To adopt a PBL approach to deliver the curriculum (buy complete pakage?)

UNIVERSIDADE DO ALGARVE The curriculum • 44 week year divided in 4 thematic 11 week modules • A Student Selected Module during each 11 week module • Tutor:student ratio 1:1 to 1:3 • Role of Primary Care: acquisition of basic clinical skills • Follow ups in the community: • pregnancy and baby (6 months), • patient with chronic disease (3 m) • handicapped patient (3 m)
UNIVERSIDADE DO ALGARVE The Teaching Staff -1 Small group of 5 full time, dedicated and experienced academicswith the following constitution: Chairperson (Dean) + Physician, Pathologist, Surgeon, Basic Sciences Dean + Paediatrician, O&G, Psychiatrist (part-time) Will take all major decisions regarding: Student admissions policy Clinical and Science tutor recruitment policy Day to day management of the curriculum Management of examinations

UNIVERSIDADE DO ALGARVE The Teaching Staff - 3 Formal agreement with the Faculty of Medical Sciences of the New University of Lisbon Intense use of the wider theatre of Europe in the recruitment of high caliber, inspiring, short term contributors
UNIVERSIDADE DO ALGARVE Cost of training a doctor in Portugal Traditional 6 year course (at 2001 prices, FCM-UNL): about €80,000 Graduate entry course (at 2007 prices, estimated): about €30,000including €1,000,000 initial investment (no new building required)
