Ice Breaker Find Someone Who Write the name and school of a person who- Debby Ward MSDE Enter a new name in each box.
Day 1 Afternoon Content Team Session Outcomes Mathematics Teachers will: Become familiar with the components of an MSDE Unit Plan. • 2. Examine specific components of a unit plan • to determine when the information could be used. Review Lesson Seeds through the lens of Universal Design for Learning (UDL).
Warm Up Warm Up Outcome: The participants will activate prior knowledge of the contents of the Maryland Common Core State Curriculum Framework documents.
Warm Up • What information is found in the Maryland Common Core Curriculum Framework documents that were reviewed at last year’s EEA? • The content standards for each grade level • Essential Skills and Knowledge statements that help to clarify the standards • The Standards for Mathematical Practice that describe student behaviors • All of the above
Warm Up ANSWER D. All of the Above • The content standards for the grade level Essential Skills and Knowledge statements clarify the standards Standards for Mathematical Practice describe student behaviors
Warm Up • Which of the following statements about the Maryland Common Core Framework documents is false? • It provides standards by grade level in grades PreK-8. • It conveys the exact order in which the standards will be taught. • It divides the high school courses into Units. • It gives examples.
Warm Up • Which of the following statements about the Maryland Common Core Framework documents is false? • ANSWER • It conveys the exact order in which the standards will be taught. • It will be up to local school systems to decide on a scope and sequence.
Warm Up • 3. From which document did Maryland adapt its framework document? • The Maryland Voluntary State Curriculum. • The College Board Initiative for Mathematics. • No Child Left Behind. • The Common Core State Standards for Mathematics.
Warm Up • 3. From which document did Maryland adapt the framework document? • ANSWER • D. The Common Core State Standards for Mathematics.
Warm Up • 4. What is the significance of the blue bold font used in the Maryland Common Core State Curriculum Frameworks? • Items unique to the Maryland State Common Core Curriculum frameworks • Terminology/diagrams that are linked to clarifications • Standard codes that reference other standards in the same grade level • Connections to other grade level standards
Warm Up • 4. What is the significance of the blue bold font used in this document? • ANSWER • B. Terminology/diagrams that are linked to clarifications

MSDE Unit Component -Overview Outcome: The participants will become familiar with the components of an MSDE unit plan.
MSDE Unit Components Overview of Unit Components
Unit Plans Provide “One Stop Shopping” Unit plans incorporate information from: • Common Core State Standards for Mathematics • Maryland Common Core State Curriculum Frameworks • PARCC Content Frameworks • Maryland Educators • Current Maryland Toolkit • RTTT Projects • Appendix A (High School)
Unit Component Categories Big Picture Build Understanding PARCC Content Framework components Instructional Resources
Big Picture • Overview • Enduring Understandings • Essential Questions • Vertical Alignment
Building Teacher Understanding • Teacher Notes • Possible Student Outcomes • Possible Organization of Standards • Connections to the Standards for Mathematical Practice • Content Standards with Essential Skills and Knowledge and Clarifications • Vocabulary/Terminology/Concepts • Common Misconceptions
Instructional Resources • Model Lesson Plan • Lesson Seeds • Sample Assessment Items • Resources • Interventions/Enrichments • Interdisciplinary Connections
PARCC Content Framework • Examples of Key Advances • Focus Standards • Fluency Expectations/Recommendations • Content Emphasis by Cluster Elementary
MSDE Goals • By June 2012: Two units per grade/course • By June 2013: Remaining units for each grade/course • 2013 – 2014: Add/edit/polish units
Jigsaw Activity Outcome: The participants will complete a jigsaw activity to become familiar with components of an MSDE unit plan.
JIGSAW Count off 1-4
Component Review Groups • Group 1 • Overview • Teacher Notes • Content Emphases by • Clusters • Group 2 • Lesson Seeds • Lesson Plans • Group 3 • Content Standards with • Essential Skills… • Group 4 • Focus Standards and • Possible Organization of • Unit Standards
Home Group Sharing • Return to Home Group • Share highlights of “Expert” • discussions
Summary MSDE Unit Plan • Does Provide • Information to help build • understanding of the new • standards and how they fit • together • Instructional resources • (under development) • Does NOT Provide • Scope and Sequence • Daily lesson plans
Break Time
Unit Plan: In-Depth Review Outcome: The participants will complete an in-depth review of an MSDE Mathematics Unit plan.
Unit Plan: In-Depth Review Task Note the sections on the foldable. Review these sections in the unit plan. Discuss the importance of each section with your group. Continued on next slide
Debrief In-Depth Review • During this discussion, answer the following question on each page of the foldable: • How might you incorporate • the information in this section • when planning a unit?
SUMMARY Each component of an MSDE Unit Plan provides important information about the new curriculum. It is important as educators that we become familiar with the value of each component.

Lesson Seed and UDL • Outcome • The participants will: • Become familiar with the format of an MSDE • Lesson Seed. • Examine lesson seeds searching for evidence of adherence to the Principles of UDL.
MSDE Lesson Seed Facts • Are created by Maryland educators • Provide learning experiences around which • teachers may build lessons. • Serve as a stimulus for lesson • development
