Purpose • To investigate the effects of early reading intervention on the development of reading skills.
The Intervention • Students were selected based on ERSI scores and reading teacher recommendation. • We worked with 3 students each. • Students were pulled for 40 minute sessions two to three times a week for a total of 14 sessions.
The Lesson Plan • Reread familiar books • Word Study • Picture Sorts • Focused on vowels • Word Bank • Writing • Focused on stretching out words • Introduced New Book • Focused on tracking print
Results • We found that our students made the most growth in spelling and word recognition. • We focused heavily on decoding skills during our tutoring sessions. • We administered spell checks during each session. • Students became more aware of concept of word and sentence structure through the daily rereading of familiar books. • Students were able to recognize more high frequency sight words through the use of word banks.
