First Baby Initiative • SPECIAL RISKS FOR FIRST TIME MOTHERS • 37% had labor induced in 2005, increased to 41.2% in 2009 • Of labor inductions, 50.9% had no documented MRF • More than 30% of those induced ended in C-section • 7% experienced two or more complications of L & D • Other studies show: • Twice the rate of epidural • Almost twice the babies admitted to NICU

  4. First Baby Initiative PROJECT GOALS FOR FIRST TIME MOTHERS • Reduce c-section rate • Reduce early admissions rate • Reduce labor induction rate • Improve birth outcomes

  5. First Baby Initiative • METHODOLOGY • 23 participating hospitals • Each hospital has team • Initial educational meeting held July 2011 • Monthly conference calls to share information and identify issues • Champion presentations to local Medical Associations
