PITY, FEAR, AND THE MAN IN-BETWEEN • Fear and pity are primary emotions for tragedy • Violent backdrop of the Mafia world makes fear a constant component in the Sopranos. • Fear towards Tony’s temper and fear towards his well-being.
For Aristotle tragedy is not when bad things happen to good people, he believes it can only occur when characters occupy a particular moral space. • Tony Soprano is a description of a tragic hero, he is a representation of a “man in between”
TONY’S TRAGIC FLAW: • Aristotle believed that Tony could be defined as a man “who falls, not through evil or depravity, but through some sort of flaw within him” • A tragic flaw for Aristotle, is a aspect of a character’s personality that makes him vulnerable enough so that he himself ultimately contributes to his own downfall.
Tony flaw was his inability to successfully live up to his conflicting moral roles and responsibilities. • Aristotle points out that pity and fear are heightened when violence takes place. • For Aristotle a tragic flaw is not bad or either a sin , nor should it be summed up in one word.
ALL IN THE FAMILIES: “…enemy harms enemy, there is nothing pitiable in either action or intention” -Aristotle • Aristotle believes that the best tragic plots come from these few noble families who underwent such high drama. • The Sopranos is filled with stories of family members trying to kill each other in horrible ways. • The family’s driven plot echoes the family conflicts of Greek tragedies • Dr. Melfi is like a mother figure for Tony
RECOGNITIONS AND REVERSALS: • Reversal: a sudden change in a character’s fortune • Recognitions: when a character comes into a particular piece of knowledge that brings on a radical alteration in his understanding of a situation
Recognition scenes crucially link to the plot that also brings with it reversal (effective way to stir emotions) • Recognition occurs a lot in The Sopranos, often on crucial moment in the plot. EX: Tony attending therapy and knowing the meaning of stuff, such as the ducks.
TRAGIC ENDINGS AND CATHARSIS: Tony fails as a friend, father-figure, and husband. The first season doesn’t end in a fall but for Aristotle it does end in a tragedy because a tragedy doesn’t necessarily end in a bad way. While time passes he is bound to fall, even by searching the cure in therapy wont help , it will only bring more pain and suffering.
