  2. 1937 Rubin Carter is born

  3. 1951 Carter charged with assault and robbery after stealing $55 and a wristwatch from a man who was struck over the head with a bottle

  4. 1954 Escapes from the State Home for Boys and joins the Army

  5. 1957 Released from prison one month later assaults three people sentenced to 3 to 9 years

  6. 1961 Carter released from prison begins his boxing career.

  7. 1966 Lafayette Grill Murders Al Bello identifies Carter as one of the Lafayette Grill killers Carter and Artis are arrested

  8. 1967-1976 An all white jury convicts Carter and Artis. They are sentenced in June March 17 , 1976 convictions overturned The Hawkins report concludes that Carter and Artis were involved in the Lafayette Grill murders.Nov-Dec second trial Dec. 22, 1976 Artis and Carter re-convicted

  9. 1980 Lesra finds a used copy of Carter's autobiography at a book sale, he and the Canadians read it and become interested in Carter's story.

  10. 1985-1988 After Carter's lawyers take the case to a Federal court Judge Lee Sarokin overturns Carter and Artis' convictions Feb. 26, 1988 the state of New Jersey decides to not hold a third trial and drops the charges against Carter and Artis.
