  1. Webquest: The Sense Organs The human body

  2. Welcome • Devotional– Task 1: Find five scriptures • Systems– Task 2: Review of systems • Sight– Task 3: Explore the eye • Hearing – Task 4: Explore the ear • Smell– Task 5: Explore the nose • Touch– Task 6: Explore the nerves • Taste– Task 7: Explore the tongue • Senses – Final Task: Explain the senses Table of Contents

  3. To quote the Psalmist, we are “fearfully and wonderfully made” (Psalm 139:14). Truly the design of the human body is one of the greatest marvels of His works. As diverse as the human population may be, the truth rings loud and clear, all of us were created in the image of God. Look no farther than the systems of the body and we will find the signature of our Creator. Welcome

  4. We have been studying about the human body. In this webquest, we will begin by reviewing some of the concepts we have already learned. Then we will explore the sense organs of the body, which are those organs that make life worth living! Welcome

  5. Devotional We were created in the image of God, with five senses to experience the wonders of His works. Some scientists may say that our senses are merely for the purpose of survival, but this is only partially true. Just as God takes pleasure in His creation, He desires us to take pleasure in living. How could this be possible without our abilities to see, hear, smell, touch, or taste? Consider the following verses…

  6. Devotional Genesis 1:29 See, I have given you every herb that yields seed which is on the face of all the earth, and every tree whose fruit yields seed; to you it shall be for food. John 10:27 My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.

  7. Devotional Songs of Songs 2:13 The fig tree puts forth her green figs, and the vines with the tender grapes Give a good smell. Luke 6:19 And the whole multitude sought to touch Him, for power went out from Him and healed them all.

  8. Devotional Psalm 34:8 Oh, taste and see that the LORD is good; Blessed is the man who trusts in Him!

  15. Our sense of sight is perhaps the most valuable to us as it is the means in which our brain receives the majority of information about our external environment. Click on the link below to answer the questions regarding the eyes and our sense of sight. http://library.thinkquest.org/3750/ A website of Oracle ThinkQuest, developed by 5th and 6th grade students. Sight

  16. Follow the link for sense of sight and answer the following questions. 1. What do we actually see when looking at an object? 2. Where does light enter the eye?  3. What is the cornea?  4. What is the pupil? 5. What causes the iris to change sizes? 6. What is the iris?  Sight: Task 3

  17. Follow the link for sense of sight and answer the following questions. 7. What is the function of the lens?  8. What is the retina? 9. What are the functions of rods and cones? 10. How is the information from the eye transferred to the brain? 11. How does the brain perceive the information it receives and how does it correct it? 12. What features offer protection to the eye? How? Sight: Task 3

  18. Next to our sense of sight, the ears are our brains second most effective means of receiving information about our external environment. Click on the link below to answer the questions regarding the ears and our sense of hearing. http://library.thinkquest.org/3750/ A website of Oracle ThinkQuest, developed by 5th and 6th grade students. Hearing

  19. Rewrite each statement. If it is false, rewrite it as a true statement. 1. The ear is designed only for hearing sounds. 2. Sound waves are created by vibrations. 3. Noise is created by a lack of vibrations in the air. 4. There are two parts to the ear canal; the outer and inner ears. 5. When sound waves hit the eardrum, it vibrates. 6. As the eardrum vibrates, it causes the three smallest bones in the body to vibrate. Hearing: task 4

  20. Rewrite each statement. If it is false, rewrite it as a true statement. 7. The hammer, then the anvil, and finally the nail vibrate after the eardrum vibrates. 8. The cochlea vibrates as a result of the stirrup’s vibration. 9. The cochlea contains fluid and thousands of cilia nerve endings. 10. The fluid in the cochlea changes the vibrations into messages for the brain. 11. The optical nerve sends messages from the ear to the brain. 12. Your sense of balance is controlled by the fluid in the semi-circular canals.  Hearing: task 4

  21. Our sense of smell brings both pleasant an unpleasant experiences in our lives. The smell of a rose is much different than the smell of garbage. Our sense of smell also helps us to distinguish how safe an environment is; like when we smell the smoke of a dangerous fire. Click on the link below to answer the questions regarding the nose and our sense of smell. http://library.thinkquest.org/3750/ A website of Oracle ThinkQuest, developed by 5th and 6th grade students. Smell

  22. Read the section titled “Your Sense of Smell.” Write a paragraph summarizing the information about the nose and our sense of smell. Be sure to use the following terms in your paragraph: • Odor particles • Nostrils • Cilia • Nasal cavity • Olfactory bulb • Olfactory nerve Smell: Task 5

  23. The sense of touch is different from the other five because the tissues for touch are found all over your body. Click on the link below to answer the questions regarding nerves and our sense of touch. http://library.thinkquest.org/3750/ A website of Oracle ThinkQuest, developed by 5th and 6th grade students. Touch

  24. Follow the link for sense of touch and answer the following questions. 1. Where does the sense of touch originate?  2. What is the purpose of the nerves in the dermis?   3. How does the brain receive information about what you touch? 4. How many types of nerve endings are in your body? 5. What are the four most common sense receptors in our bodies? 6. Pain receptors are the most common in our bodies, what is the benefit of these receptors? 7. Why do you think some areas of the body are more sensitive than others? Touch: Task 6

  25. The weakest of the five senses is our sense of taste. Yet it plays a vital role as it often determines what we eat. Click on the link below to answer the questions regarding the tongue and our sense of taste. http://library.thinkquest.org/3750/ A website of Oracle ThinkQuest, developed by 5th and 6th grade students. Taste

  26. Follow the link for sense of taste and answer the following questions. You are sitting down at the dinner table for a wonderful Thanksgiving meal. As you eat, you are savoring the tastes of the food. Some tastes are good, others are bad. Write a story explaining your experience. Discuss the types of foods you are eating; something sweet, salty, sour, and bitter, discuss the location of the taste buds on the tongue as those senses of taste are triggered. Taste: Task 7

  27. The senses of our bodies work together to provide the pleasurable experience of living. They also provide the unpleasant experiences, such as pain, that are meant to ensure our survival. To conclude this webquest, you will be asked to summarize all you have learned in the form of a song. Senses

  28. Senses: Final Task Create a song that explains the functions and parts of the sense organs. Your song should be original, include a beat, and relate the sense organs to the systems of the body. You will be required to present your song as either a prerecorded audio or video presentation, other multimedia presentation, or live.
