Warren County SchoolsAcademically and Intellectually Gifted (AIG) Plan 2013-2016 AIG Plan Presented to the Warren County Board of Education June 11, 2013
Background information: • AIG Plan is updated every 3 years • Last approved by the Board of Education in July 2010 • 2013-2016 Plan is a basic update of the July 2010 AIG Plan • Document that promotes reflection and self-evaluation of best practices related to gifted education
AIG Updates • AIG Standards that were new in 2010 became policy in December, 2012 • Intellectual giftedness is now separated from academic giftedness • AIG Plans are posted on the Department of Public Instruction website upon Board of Education approval • Appendices are not included
AIG Standards and Practices • In 2010, AIG Practices had to be designated as maintained, focus, or future practices. • 2013 Plan does not allow for future practices, rather practices must be focused or maintained. • Warren County Schools accomplished many practices, including future ones in the 2010-2013 AIG Plan cycle. Maintained practices were also improved.
2013-2016 Plan Updates • Procedures to identify intellectual giftedness are included in the AIG Plan • Procedures for early admission to Kindergarten are included in the AIG Plan • Direct AIG services are offered at the elementary and middle schools, and consultation and monitoring of AIG students is done at the three high schools.
Targeted areas for 2013-2016 AIG Plan • Increasing professional development opportunities for general education teachers related to AIG learners • Establishing an AIG Advisory Board in Warren County • Increasing partnerships with the community and institutions of higher learning to benefit gifted education • Providing more opportunities for feedback regarding the AIG Program.
AIG Coordinator • The 2010 AIG Plan suggested an AIG Coordinator was needed to oversee the AIG Plan and implementation. • AIG Specialists work in conjunction with EC Director to implement the AIG Plan • The NC Department of Public Instruction finds this to be acceptable due to the fact that our AIG Specialists are fully licensed.
In Summary: • Valuable process • Ongoing monitoring, reflection, and self-evaluation • Revised focus • We met and exceeded our objectives for the 2010-2013 AIG Plan. • There is still work to be done!
